Re: New Zealand or Aussie off shore yacht registration

Recently I extensively researched this topic for a soon-to-be yacht purchase. This will be my third AMSA registration. In the past I have found AMSA to be both bureacractic and incredibly helpful. Given that we are dealing with a government services, one should never expect anything other than a bureacratic maze.

However, my past and present experience has been that asking the right questions and accepting straight answers (or asking clarifying questions) does bring about reasonable expectations and deadlines.

The longest I've ever waited for registration paperwork was two weeks with postage. The shortest was just two days with a personal pickup of the relevant paperwork. The key was to provide all the necessary paperwork and documentation at one time. Anything else creates delays and argumentative attitudes produce longer delays as one always catches more with honey than with a bomb.

The current pricing is a one only cost of around 1100 AUD.

There are no other requirements needed but seaworthiness of the yacht is expected (and rightly so!).

Oh.... one last thing. State registration will or may be required as well if the boat is often moored in Australian waters. This is very much at the discretion of each Australian state regulating authority.

Ski69sail; I thought Registration in NZ was quite simple and not expensive.
Getting the Cat 1 safety equipment was expensive. Just get the very minimum you need.
Having to have someone on board who had done it before was in the event fantastic for us and the boat.
Came back over on someone elses boat, a Ganley Weco 40, - the boat's second off-shore trip in 2 years and Cat 1 was very straight forward because apart from updating the 1st aid gear and a waterblast, practically everything was ready to go. (Turned out he could have done with a new forestay.)
Customs very friendly and no probs as long as you have your Cat 1 certificate.

Good luck
