Re: Lord Howe Island Trip

To Steve and Co

LHI is a great trip but not always straight forward for some. We had a gale for 3 days going out, had 2 perfect weeks there and a gale for 3 days returning. Others we know have left the coast several times only to return never making it to the island. We did the trip in January - our first off shore passage with sextant to see if we could locate the island - we did.

It is an idyllic place and the islanders are fantastic. If going in a group be sure to contact the island first to book your moorings. You are not allowed to anchor in the lagoon as the island is a world heritage site. Also one finds it difficult to purchase or pay for items on a Saturday as most of the islanders are 7th day Adventists and Sat is the Sabbath. We wanted to depart on a Sat and had to post our fees.

A must do - is to read the log of the Kathleen Gillet while there.

I am sure you will not want to leave as there is so much to see and do on the island and one day we may have to return as our memories are beginning to fade.

Cheers Sue

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip

Hi Guys,

We are planning to cast off from Botany Bay around the 20th of February if the weather is kind. We have a mooring booked from 26th for 10 days.

Dragonlady - When are you planning to depart. I would like to have been able to attend your meeting on the 28th but work commitments prevent me from doing so.

Having successfully done the trip in September 2011 i can empathise with those who have tried and truned back. We couldnt light the stove for a few days on the way out due to sea conditions being too uncomfortable and had to survive on cold food and drinks.

Cant wait to get underway as it such a beautiful place.

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip

Hi Sweet Chariot,

We are booked in for mid March 15 with a 3 to 4 day window to allow for bad weather.
I can sympathize with you on the stove as we ran out of gas, due to a leak from Noumea to Bundaberg a few years ago.
8 days with no hot food wasn't the best.
If you can't make the 28th I'm sure we can meet up another time.

DL

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip

Hi DL

Our booking has us departing the lagoon 8th March weather permitting so we will most likely pass each other. Chances are courses wont be close enough for visual but you never know.

Good luck with your meeting and i hope you get a good level of interest.

Hoping to be on Sydney Harbour this Saturday but Will be anchored up in Lavender Bay on New Years Eve if your down that way.

Cheers

Lord Howe looks nice. Balls Pyramid, not so much.
Three days in a gale to get there - did you know there is an airstrip there? :-)

As is said "it is not the destination but the journey" although in this case the destination is pretty good too.

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip

Sorry to fire up this thread again but it looks like we are finally going to do the trip to LHI in October. We are ready and yes, I have chickened out twice before but I have the crew and the time available to do it this time.
Anyone else making the trip?
Also, I have picked this time because as far as I am aware the Gosford to LHI race has been cancelled. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Lord Howe Island Trip

Good luck with your trip, it is a wonderfull destination.
Pick your weather window and cruise at pace if you go too slow you may end up with headwinds. It's not the end of the world in a monohull but reaching is always nicer especially in a cat.
Ball's pyramid is amazing and the climb up Mount Gower is well worth the effort.
Staying on the boat in the lagoon is quite bumpy at hight tide so accommodation ashore is another worthwhile expense.
Internet is quite limited and there are no mobile phones, (many people see this as a plus).
I believe the race is no longer held but quite a few people still do the trip and have a BBQ instead.
