Thanks for the comment on the blog. The reef fringing the lagoon breaks the swell and offers good conditions for about 3 hrs each side of the low tide, when the reef is then exposed. Once covered by a flooding tide the swell, if onshore, continues into the lagoon, and yes conditions can get quite uncomfortable.

I booked a mooring through the Lord Howe Island Board. Details can be found on the web site. Google the LHIB and go from there.

If you have any difficulties, get back to me and i'll get the he details or you.

Just thought I would update on where we are and when we are thinking of going.
Over the past few months we have been ferrying bucket loads of money out to our boat to get her ready for sea. Its a long and expensive list.
At this stage I am planning to go to LH for the BBQ cruise which is early November.
In April we are going for a run down to Jervis Bay to try out the crew and boat.
There is a meeting at the Orient Hotel in June or July for the BBQ Cruise. I will confirm the date.
Apart from that, If anyone wants to follow us down to JB in April. You are more than welcome.

We are working around our work rosters also. It looks like we will be leaving Sydney on Friday 12th of April or Sat 13 April. It should see us at JB on the Sunday.

I have been told the only way to avoid the dreaded East Coast Low is to go in September or October.

I went in December a couple of years back from Sydney and it was a pretty good trip. Went on the first puff of a southerly buster which swung nicely to the SW and had us 70 miles off shore in 8 hours. Then had a couple of days battling up hill, had to use the engine a bit but no really rough stuff. Stayed well away from the seamounts, they can cause all sorts of problems.

I'm planning on leaving Sydney in early December this year and making LHI my first stop, but if you're planning on going in company in mid to late November I could be persuaded to take off a little early. I wouldn't leave in October, apart from conflicting with the race it's not the best time weatherwise when you get there, I'd leave it to warm up for a month or two first. I've been in the race once, it was a pretty good trip but snorkelling in the lagoon in October was a bit chillier than doing the same in December.

Moorings are easy to come by, but you do need to book in advance. Island folk are pretty nice and the resident constable/maritime/quarantine/customs officer is fairly laid back and helpful.

Its looking like Saturday. We have 2 blokes flying in from WA for the trip. So far our plan is to get the boat packed and ready on Friday but I am now thinking that we pack and board the boat on Friday and sail down to Botany Bay on the Friday afternoon. Take one of the moorings at Laperouse for Friday night, leaving very early the next morning for JB.
All a bit weather depended but we can firm things up as it gets closer.
You could meet us at Laperouse Friday arvo?

That sounds good. Let me know what time you expect to be at Laperouse and i will meet you there.

This timing should get us in JB Sat aft/evening and that will be good for my departure Monday back for BB.

I swam in the lagoon in early September and it was so so cold.

So far we are still on track for BB on Friday afternoon. I am hoping to leave before daylight on Saturday morning in order to get into JB before dark.
We need to be back on Tuesday in order to catch flights on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately it looks like we are all on a schedule.
Just in case the weather turns against us, I am making some inquiries about temporary moorings at JB, I think there are some that exist at a sailing club?
