I think the two men were a bit stupid!
I could see what looked like 2 Liferafts floating beside them undeployed.

I had a similar incident happen to me delivering an old tug in a winter gale when she opened up and sank in minutes.

Deploying the life raft when the water reached the pilothouse allowed us to get into the raft dry and away from the sinking boat before anything could catch us and drag us down.

They were lucky not trained!

No. You need to pull on the cord for a life raft to deploy. It’s not automatic when they hit the water which many believe. Maybe the two guys in the water didn’t know how to properly deploy the rafts.

Exactly Ken and with some it takes a very hard pull.on the line to overcome the anti-wicking packing.

To clarify, properly installed liferafts are designed to deploy automatically.... But only.in sunken ship mode.
When the ship sinks a hydrostatic release allows the straps holding the canister in its cradle to release and the rafts buoyancy pops it towards the surface.
The activation pendant is about 60 ft long and attached to the ship.
When the ship sinks it tries to pull the raft down but instead fires the trigger pin on the air bottle before detaching at raft via a weak link.

In those conditions , the raft should have been activated manually and the guys could have stepped into them , well before the final plunge to the bottom

That sounds terrible! What do you think happened that caused the boat you were delivering to sink?

It was an older wooden tug and the stern planks had apparently got crushed by a big steel chip barge in Port Alberni a week before I was hired to deliver it to Vancouver.

The stern planks sprung open and the tug sunk in minutes. Just enough time for a Mayday and to launch the liferaft

Sounds north European to me, not quite German or Danish so maybe Dutch???
