sv Yacht Cruz lost off of Baja
Distress call received Jan 10th from sailboat "Yacht Cruz" an Irwin Ketch. Second hand reports say near Ensenada. Boat was sailing North from Cabo to San Diego. Left Cabo around Dec 26th. This info is from daughter of woman on board. I have no detail other than above, which of course very sketchy. If I find out anything else I will post here. Link is to screen shot of cell phone post with photo of boat. US Coast Guard and Mexican Navy are searching at this time. Obviously anyone with info should contact Coast Guard.

Re: sv Yacht Cruz lost off of Baja
This is copied from a post (5 hours ago) from daughter (not Pam Mayhall) of crew:
The coast guard has found my mom's emergency beacon on shore. They have found life jackets, a few bumpers, some wood, a mattress. No other signs of their vessel. The Coast Guard did confirm that they got two distressed calls from there vessel on Jan 10th. However, no vessel was spotted from where distressed calls came from. We meet with the Coast Guard at 1pm here in LA. Keep praying they find them today!!
LATEST UPDATE ON YACHT CRUZ MISSING! PLEASE KEEP SHARING!

That doesn't sound good... was there a life raft on board?

Jim, don't know about any life raft. I have very little info, but just hoping someone may have recent knowledge of the boat.

Re: sv Yacht Cruz lost off of Baja
there was a storm in ensenada area monday with 45 kt winds.. there were breakaways in san diego, and reports to me were the wind came suddenly and hard at 0300 in sd, which would place onset of storm for ensenada at about jan 9-10, as ensenada is 60 miles south of san diego and generally enjoys same weather.
i hope these folks are safe somewhere and merely need found.
i certainly would not wish to sail my formosa or any boat thru these pacific storms.

Looks like Ted Irwin's ketch that he built for himself. Saw it in Key West a few years with Ted on it. Had dinner with him, what a great gentleman. RIP Mr. Irwin.

Re: sv Yacht Cruz lost off of Baja
I am currently in Ensenada and haven't heard about this. I will check into it today. The weather was pretty bad on Monday and Tuesday.

Re: sv Yacht Cruz lost off of Baja
If PLB and lifejackets have been found on shore.. lets hope they have gone inland and will be found soon.. whats the coast like in that area.

Rocky and exposed. A few small beaches / possible landing areas with goat trails to civilization.
I've shore dived there and you had to be selective on where you entered

difficult to be selective when in pacific storms. surf is extreme and conditions suck overall for sailing and surfing. once into surfline,it is over.
