Re: Sunfish takes out 16m race boat

My thought was somebody had put foils on a Sunfish sailboat which then beat the 16m racer.

They put foils on an Opti why not a sunfish too?

Many years ago, my boat was a Sunfish type (Dolphin SR) with my college age wife and her girlfriend in bikinis we sailed close in front of the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Nearly took out an entire class of future Naval Officers.

Really a shame that a $2 million dollar racing machine can't handle water engress from rudders hitting a sunfish.

They're big!!! Weigh up to 1,000 kg -2,200 lbs. I nearly hit one basking near the surface middle of the day middle of the ocean on our Atlantic crossing. Glad I was watching where I was driving.

Would definitely ruin your whole day.

Oh yah I don't mean no boat should go away undamaged, but the Farr 55s really should have better compartmentalization for the dual rudders.

Re: Sunfish takes out 16m race boat

....interesting that this is this second time that this yacht has hit a sunfish...this time causing it to sink.....the yacht was on a return voyage from Hobart to Sydney after placing well in the Sydney Hobart Race that started on Boxing Day....she was some 150 km offshore east of Flinders Island off Tasmania......her EPIRB was activated and 2 helicopters despatched to lift all 6 crew members.....all now safely ashore......there are lots of photos ,rescue footage, and the recent for sale listing to be found with a Google search.......sea depth negates salvage......
