Mini tornado overturns catamaran and sinks a monohull in Auckland

Not much info yet, but this story http://nzh.tw/12257976 shows pictures of a 50 foot cat flipped upside down and a monohull sunk in its berth at Westhaven Marina, near downtown Auckland. Wow! The cat looks like a relatively lightweight racing boat. The monohull looks around 35 feet and sitting on its keel with just a bow protruding.

For the thousands and thousands of mono vs multi storm survivability posts in this forum, it looks like a "portacabin" is the best and most seaworthy thing to be in when the sh!t hits the fan. Ha ha ha.

I think the wind gust estimate (90km/h) was a bit.. low.

Another story adds some more detail. Up to 75 boats damaged at the marina. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-z...en-marina.html

There were a series of microbursts as the thunderstorm front moved across Auckland. I haven’t heard of boats being damaged or flipped/sunk before though. At least not while not sailing.

Rare events, and very sad for the owners of the boats. I noticed the power supply to the slip had departed the dock by the mono.

The flipping of the Rosella is really sad, just after a re-fit, no wonder the owners say it's left them "gutted." Boy, that would be a terrible phone call to receive. "Okay, re-plan your lives RIGHT NOW!" It does sometimes happen in a microburst. One at Kettering in Tasmania maybe 3 yrs. ago, maybe 4, now, but the cat came down on a mono, doing considerable damage to both.

Yeah, I just saw that the cat is Rosella, a 17.5m Schionning Waterline. We considered that boat before buying ours. I really hope they can salvage her and that the mast hitting the bottom during the flip didn’t damage the superstructure. Apparently they were on a pile mooring and their lines were snapped. They’re reporting gusts to 200km/hr (near 90 knots).

Perhaps there should be a poll. Which is more seaworthy mono, cat, or portacabin. Think I'd prefer to be on the upturned cat space-wise, but the portacabin still has some walls so you've got protection from the wind.

Anyway, not great for those involved, but these events happen. Like the super short storm in Nidri Greece some time back that sunk monos, flipped a cat, and killed 6 people. It is what it is.
