Re: Boat fire 34+ missing
It's an interesting story. It seems unlikely that a 75 foot boat would be using gasoline and not diesel so it seems odd to have such massive fire so quickly. Oddly enough the entire 5 person crew was supposedly awake a 3:30 in the morning and all got off the boat, but no sleeping passengers did. Perhaps the crew was awakened by the person on watch because something was amiss and they were attempting to address it. It will be interesting to see what the CG investigation reveals.

Here's another link to the same incident. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/02/u...gtype=Homepage
What a shame no one could get any of the guests out. Pretty awful.

Perhaps the dive compressors and gennys run off gas?

Re: Boat fire 34+ missing
Seems like a lot of people to be sleeping on a 75 boat.

Re: Boat fire 34+ missing
It is just so deeply saddening. Conception has been a fixture of he Santa Barbara harbor and a successful and well-run operation for some 40 years. My heart goes out to all the families of the victims. This hits hard at the Santa Barbara harbor. I was hoping against hope to hear of survivors of those below decks but so far none.

Boat fire 34+ missing
So Cal news is reporting a possible propane explosion that blew the house & crew off the boat and turned the hull into a fire pit.

Re: Boat fire 34+ missing
As to what burned so hot so fast, it was a dive boat. Perhaps they had o2 onboard for making nitrox...

Correct on the diesel, however, dive boat will have gas for the compressor and propane for cooking. Crew might have been engaged in both preparing for the day.

Mains engines: Detroit Diesel 8V92 Turbo DDEC @ 550 HP each
Generators: Northern Lights MP55C, 55 KW, 220/110 Volt
Fuel Capacity: 1600 Gallons
Fixed CO2 engine room fire suppression system
Chase Boat: 16 foot Caribe with 40 HP Honda 4-stroke outboard
I believe the compressors are electric.

Re: Boat fire 34+ missing
Folks, you're missing a biggy. Investigation withstanding, it's not 02 on board or gasoline stored, but simply the horrible flamability of fiberglas resin.
We need to confront this. It takes only intnese heat in a small area, typical of a high amperage short circuit in our DC wiring, to ignite a fiberglass hull. The smoke produced is deadly in its own right. Few boats, even meeting USCG commercial requirements, have a way of fighting such a fire, and escape becomes the critical issue.
We've all seen the photographs of just about any boat fire, with huge quantities of black smoke and raging flames. That's the hull burning.
With small entrances/exits common to boats, it's a foot race to get out before the interior is filled with poisonous gas, and beyond a crew's capability to enter and fight it.

Re: Boat fire 34+ missing
Absolutely no escape hatches over the berths and a COI for 46 people?
That doesn't seem right to me. Coast Guard dropped the ball here or doesn't have good enough regulations regarding fire safety?
