Australian yacht sinks near Philippines

This is a pretty remote area and they were probably trying to enter the pass south of Socorro Island, on the way to Hinatuan Pass...So don't expect any details for a while

Just 5 days ago, there was an irregular Tropical Storm that lingered around the east coast for a few days causing lots of flooding and big seas.

One other news report said the capsized, but who knows???

If 3 were clinging to a life bouy in those rough conditions, they probably swallowed a lot of seawater.

Kinda puts that $300 life raft thread into perspective.

That's strange:

so, it was not capsized? and the hole did not sink it?

When abadoning a vessel... step up into the life raft.

If that photo is supposed to be the yacht AFTER the abandonment, there's something very strange going on here. Why on earth would experienced folk abandon a vessel in that condition? As described, these were experienced yotties... this just seems way out of whack to me.

that pic is before as is nicely tied up and with the dinghy.

sure they have not exchanged boat for dinghy in wild seas for no reason. Apart from hitting reef, only way hole can be made to my knowledge in monohull is roll, then mast breaks or keel gets compromised.

Well, the later report said that the yacht was nearly intact when recovered, so I'm still a bit unsure of what has transpired. Holed or not holed? Why abandoned?

Yeah, even the news reports state that the details are "sketchy".
Pelagic was right about the storm, "Urduja", AKA "Kai-tak". It just lingered back and forth, pummeling the poor guys for days.

Here's a very early guess at a timeline pieced together from contradicting news reports. (vary from 4-6 days floating at sea on a "life buoy")

Dec 10 (ish): SV Katerina left Davao after a refueling stop, then headed north up Mindanao's East Coast
Dec 12: Urduja is declared a tropical depression, 200 nm East of Mindanao's East coast, heading northwest
Dec 13: Urduja turns west, then southwest (collision course for SV Katerina?)
Dec 14: Urduja upgraded to tropical storm, 50 nm northeast of Siargao island, possibly exact position of SV Katerina
Dec 14: EPIRB signal received
Dec 14-15 Urduja does a weird little dance, reversing to the northeast, pummeling the same track twice (and most likely our boys)
Dec 17: Fisherman spot the men, rescued 50 miles from Siargao

More support to leave the life raft at home. Maybe even the ring buoy.

I guess if you need that false sense of security, go for it. I have confidence in the boats I have.

Indeed the picture of that boat is of a C&N 58 ("Katerina"), sold in Newcastle NSW, early April 2016. One of the previous names was "Assignment", when owned by Walter Cronkite. Very nice solid boat, very little or nothing wrong with that boat when I was on it.

My thoughts are with the sailors and their families.
