If it was me... I'd change the photos to horizontal. Few boats I've seen stand up in the water with their sterns in the air...

Nice vessel BTW. GL with the sale

Hi Greg - nice list on the boat. In the photo, is that the solent stay I am looking at or the stay'sl stay? It just looked a little low down on the mast for a solent. Is the solent stay and/or the stay'sl stay removable?

Thanks,
Ron

No, what you see is the Inner Fore Stay for the Staysail. When I pushed the headstay forward about 2', I left the inner fore stay where it was. This, in addition to helping balance the weather helm out, opened up the slot between the two sails. I left the original stem fitting on the bow of VOILA!; and since it was there and available to use, and the mast was still being fabricated, I had an internal slot and roller put in just below where the headstay attaches to the mast. It is in a good location for a second jib or a drifter, (downwind sailing with two jibs poled out?), either on a roller or not. I've never used it, but it is there. By the way, that original stem fitting is the only chainplate that was not renewed.
Thanks for your interest.

Scott and Kitty on Tamure made exactly the same modifications and have circumnavigated twice on it. They also have two whisker poles and Scott says it allows him to fly two jibs and make serious time on trade wind routes.

Bob Perry liked the bowsprit so much and how it eased weather helm that he incorporated it into the V42, but as a cutter without the solent stay.

If I ever have a spare $10k sitting around I might just pull the trigger and do the same.

How was the length of the bowsprit decided upon?

Part 2: The Inner Forestay is not easily removable, because I went with a furling staysail. I spent some time with a sailor that sailed 5 years in the southern oceans. He told me the rig of choice down there was to have a furling staysail. Easy to reduce sail in a hurry without having to go forward. I've spent 35+ years at sea, and believe me, there are times you should not be going forward, (even with a 50' freeboard). Sailing as a Cutter is easy: just backwind the staysail, let the clew of the genoa pass over it, set the genoa, then take care of the staysail. Piece of Cake.
The Solent provision has never been used. It should be removable to allow for easy tacking. I'd probably go with a removable furler. This "solent" is aft of the headstay, so, I'm not sure it is just what others are calling a solent.
Aloha, Greg
