Re: 33FT Cruising Sailboat On A $30k Budget

I have a Tartan 34c commissioned in 1974. I am currently finishing a major re-fit with the intension of taking one more cruise with her of undetermined duration and destination(s). When I have had enough I will sell her. To take your points in order.

34'
11'beam
Sloop
Draws 3'11' board up, 8'6" board down
Wheel steering with back-up tiller in case....
Keel rudder
solid
Beta 28hp with barely five hours (great engine)
solid rigging (not recent)
good size fuel and water with additional collapsable 20(I think, it's been a while) gal water
mid ships quarter berth, aft-under-cockpit quarter berth, forward queen V berth
2 burner stove with oven plus nuwave induction cook top
over size bimini plus bahama cover when at rest
no davits (I always drag her along)
her being a 8'5" Caribe ribbed with a 9.9hp Merc with tiller controls
main and roller furled sails just completely re-done
full compliment of sails in good condition (Spinny, working jib, storm jib )
Simco WP30 autopilot which I am working on (wonderful)
Two refig units in same compartment so I can turn one off to defrost and keep things good with the other.

If you are in a hurry then I suggest, like Carl Heintz, that you look into the boat. It is the best sailing boat I have ever been on.
Regards,
Jim Reeves

Re: 33FT Cruising Sailboat On A $30k Budget

If you're still looking, we have a Tartan 33 for sale - located on pine Island, FL, just west of Cape Coral. Draft is 4'5", engine recently repowered, fractional rig. Rig replaced in 2005 (mast, boom, standing rigging, sails). Has autopilot, aft bimini, dodger & dodger extension. Fits within your budget, too!

Your 30 k is about 40k up here.

Your list is long and a couple of wishes which may make shopping more interesting. The main one is a repower.

One could easily spend the whole 30k on a repower, new electronic components and some nice camvas.

My suggestion is that you make be back in the 80's to get what you want. Sabre 34 is a great boat in your price range.

Good shopping

Second this......fresh water boats used 5-6 months a year are generally in much better condition when looking for an older solid boat.

Something like this or one of the other older 30-35' catamarans would be a good option and can be found near the price range suggested. A lot more spacious for a family of 3 compared to 30-40yr old 30-35' monos. Mom & Dad in the main cabin, daughter in one of the rear cabins and the 3rd cabin converted to a pantry/storage, which is what we did when we had a Gemini. With a 14-16' beam, you can still typically use normal slips on the east coast with no upcharge for being a catamaran.

The big issue I see is the OP expecting a perfect boat (regardless of cat vs mono or specific model) for $30k. Instead look for a boat that is solid and functional (engine and sail plan work and are reliable) with no major issues (ie, deck rot and such) but may need cosmetic work that can be fixed DIY or when you save up the money.

Re: 33FT Cruising Sailboat On A $30k Budget

If you're still looking, I have a 1989 O'Day with new (and 2nd set) sails, new auto pilot, new chart plotter, etc. I started in Florida six months ago and am in the BVI now but will need to head home soon. She's solid and proven and has a closing door on the aft berth, nice for a family. I've had an adventure and am only asking what I have in her, $25,000. PM me if you'd like more info.
