2012 Leopard 44 Partial Refit 150K

Located: Fajardo, Puerto Rico

This 2012 Leopard 44 was damaged in Hurricanes Irma and Maria and subsequently salvaged and partially restored. She is the OWNERS VERSION and built and sold by RC as a Leopard. She is not a Moorings boat. Named as Cruising World’s 2012 boat of the year, she is fast, comfortable and a great platform for adventuring near and far. This is a unique opportunity for a cruising family to get into a modern catamaran at a fraction of the going market rate.

The current owners salvaged this vessel right after the storms with the intention of configuring her for world cruising. Now, their plans have changed and they have decided to place the boat for sale.

She is currently in a slip in Fajardo, Puerto Rico—ready for her refit to be completed. Once finished, she can be placed into charter in the VI or used as a liveaboard for Caribbean and world sailing.

Unlike most hurricane damaged vessels this boat HAS A MAST, boom and sails. Currently the mast is in storage in Virgin Gorda and needs to be rigged with new running and standing rigging, mast wiring, spreaders, and lighting.

The following work has been completed on the vessel.

1. Repaired damaged fiberglass and seacock that resulted in partial sinking on port side during Irmaria. Hull was rebuilt with epoxy and all damaged coring replaced. New bottom paint and boot stripe were applied before splashing in March 2018.
2. Replaced main DC electrical bus.
3. Installed 3 new 8D AGM batteries yielding 720AH of 12V power
4. Installed new 3000W inverter/charger.
5. Installed new 40AMP global battery charger (this boat is wired as an “inverter-based boat” per Nigel Calder’s recommendations. She can be plugged into shore power around the world using only the proper plug adapter).
6. Installed new lighting in Master head
7. Replaced racor on starboard engine
8. Replaced alternator and belt on starboard engine (Yanmar 3JH5E)
9. Performed yearly overhaul of Generator (6KW Northern Lights)
10. Replaced seawater pump for starboard electric, macerating master head.

Items that need to be completed

1. Replacement of port engine. The owners were planning on an electric conversion for this hull but the original motor is still available from Yanmar. Cost from the Puerto Rico Yanmar dealer is $8500. (NOTE the 3JH5E is not EPA compliant but CAN be purchased in US waters because of a storm damage exception policy).
2. Rigging the mast: The owners have received various quotes from 5000 all the way to 15000 for new standing/running rigging. If the new owners are handy, the rigging can be completed for the cost of wire rope and mechanical fittings.
3. Installation of new or rebuilt water pump">raw water pump on generator ($130 for rebuild kit or $330 for new pump)
4. Sprucing up the fiberglass and portlights. The boat will need to be sanded and painted at the next haul out. She is fully sound but there are still some deep scratches from the mangroves that need to be addressed. 2 portlight windows should be replaced.
5. Installation of 4 new stanchions and 2 new gate stanchions. The owners have the stanchions on board. The original gate stanchions can be purchased from RC.
6. Port side accommodations: The port side guest hull needs new lighting, a new AC raw water pump, new toilet raw water pump, new bathroom fixtures, and some minor fiberglass repair in the heads where the original hull repairs were made. She needs new mattresses and “comfort items.” ($500 US)
7. The electrical connections on the port side hot water tank need replacement ($100 US)
8. Replacement of windlass breaker and solenoid ($130 from ebay). The windlass works just fine but both the main breaker switch and the solenoid need to be changed.
9. Installation of second 30 amp shore service—cord and breaker switch ($250).
10. Air Con Service: The AC works on the starboard side but the compressor is original. It will need a Freon boost or replacement.
11. Repair or replace trampoline ($750 new or less to repair).

Equipment List:

1. Raymarine E80 touchscreen navigation suite including chartplotter with integrated autopilot (fully functioning) supplemented by Raymarine wind and depth.

UPDATE: I will be on the boat Nov 16-19 and am happy to facilitate additional photo requests, a virtual tour, or a personal showing in that window.

Was this your salvage and restoration project? I am curious how you were handling this living here in Phoenix.

Yes, I've spent 10 weeks on the boat this year working on it. So, lots of flights back and forth...

Great write up for those interested in what it would take financially, not labor hours, to get a hurricane salvaged catamaran back on her feet. One can understand how travel back and forth wears one out , and the costs incurred to do so.

For someone with the money and desire to do a refit here's your chance to try it! Good luck with the sale, sharp looking cat!
