Leopard 40 Davits Capacity?

Does anyone know the max lifting load for a R&C Leopard 40s davits? Thanks.

Re: Leopard 40 davits capacity?

I recently crewed a Leopard 42, which will haul a reasonably-sized inflatable with outboard.

Which makes me wonder what you've found out there. It's okay to PM me if you don't want everybody else in on the deal.

Ive seen them with 10ft dinks and 25hp 4 strokes... I wouldn't go any bigger than that... Not because the davits can't handle it, but because of the negative impact that much weight on the stern will have on your sailing performance

You´re right, had a delivery of a 45" leopard with caribe rib, console seat and 15hp engine. Was heavy enough. It need two guys to handle.

Still like to know the actual designed max load. I know they can take a reasonable load bit you cant be too careful with glassfibre davits!

The reason im asking is actually for a friend, do you think an Avon jetrib would be too heavy?

Re: Leopard 40 davits capacity?

At the Leo 45 were steel davits. A jetrib 320 f.e. has 285 Kg, so I think it´s too much for glasfiber davits.

btw.: just found it...http://www.pot1.com/avon_jet_ribs__a...htm:whistling:

We have the Leopard 40 (2007) with the standard davits. It shows the capacity is 250lbs which isn't much. They also don't seem high enough off the water. We would like different ones eventually.

Re: Leopard 40 davits capacity?

Mind that the davits will be designed with a safety margin. You may think it is all fine then the lamination where the davits are bolted gives. I have seen very many such issues, most recently on a Dean.

When I used to work for the moorings I would climb into dinghies on the l40 davits and I weighed 185 pounds at the time..., I wouldn't do it now.., carrying a spare tire these days...

Don't forget... a static load is one thing... the shock loads imposed in a sea will be much greater..

Not sure how great the shock loads are on a well secured dinghy on a large cat its not as if they are prone to dropping off waves. I think if the dinghy is flopping and bouncing then thats a different story.

Re: Leopard 40 Davits Capacity?

I've often wondered why more boats don't have a "flat section" between the two hulls like the Sunreef Catamarans do so you can lift your tender out of the water and secure it while under passage.

Re: Leopard 40 Davits Capacity?

I have a 40' 2010 leopard . I brace the davits to the hard top with 1" stainless pipe .
I called several sources to confirm this was structurally sound and was encouaged as this was the best solution .
I have a 12' caribe and a 9.9 mercury
This has worked great
