Anyone with experience in sailing into Hong Kong bay? Are there Marinas you can use without paying for a membership in a club?

I used to live and sail there (until 2004). The harbor is a bit hairy, but scenic. The outlying islands are a nice sail - especially Lantau, Lamma, Cheung Chau and the Sokos.

Marinas: I believe Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has guest slips. I know that Discovery Bay Marina Club has affordable guest slips (it's on Lantau's east side - opposite airport, and near the new Disneyland).

Sneuman has some great advice, I'd recommend his suggestions as well regarding the marina's.

Yes, Hong Kong harbor is extremely busy. I've been to Hong Kong and you'll see it all there,. from Chinese junks to heavy commercial traffic, consisting of high speed ferries to the tankers, container ships, not mentioning the cruisers of all shapes and sizes. But the island and area is beautiful, mystic despite the congestion!

Hi Michael,
To support the above comments - busy but very interesting harbour, also very nice islands on the east side of the New territories. The marina situation is mainly "overload", too many yachts for the available facilities though the yacht clubs do have visitor policies. You may find them on Google and Jimmy Cornell's site has a pretty complete listing.
I actually live at a marina, Hong Kong Gold Coast, on the west side of the New Territories which caters for a variety of boats from jet skis to mega yachts but, oddly amongst Hong Kong marinas, is only approx 50% occupied.
Royal Hong Kong, Hebe Haven, Aberdeen and Discovery Bay normally have no available marina space but may accommodate visitors on moorings.
I can enquire locally on availability if you give me some specific dates and contact info.

Good advice, I'd just reiterate though that I never had a problem just popping into Disco Bay (as the locals call it). I used to keep my boat on a mooring just outside the marina, but frequently went into to do some repairs. That was never once a problem, and I did so until 2004. I have friends at the marina and would be happy to inquire as to what - if anything - has changed in the last few years.
