Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

So many.

St Pierre et Miquelon are really nice. Norte Dame bay has tons of islands with wind and protected sailing. The remote east coast of Quebec is wonderful with almost no yachts, many remote islands.

But oh sooooo many more to explore.

te tautua means "The Other side" in Maori. About 2 or 3 boats come each year.

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

I've always been fascinated by very remote islands, especially ones with small communities on them, like Tristan de Cuhna, The Faroe Islands, the Outer Hebrides, or the Kerguelen Islands.

I don't know why--I guess I'm fascinated by remoteness.

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

The islands of Micronesia are wonderful places to experiance the things one thinks about when looking for that feeling of "culture shock" or amazement..The Gilberts and to a lesser degree the Solomans have a lot to offer also...I understand that the lesser known islands of Indonesia are neat also..Having been to Bali,Lumbok ,Java etc. I would think that there are some neat places for sure..

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

We found this broken lifeboat on the rocky shore of this uninhabilted island.

I guess the beauty of a place depends largely upon how you arrive and how you spend your time.

We sailed there as well. Which anchorage did you like best and why?

I thought about naming a few eastern Canadian islands too, but then thought I might be nuts because they're cold and isolated and no one else would want to visit them.

I'm glad you mentioned these.

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

There are reportedly only TWO perfect islands in the world:

The island you last left; the island you'll next visit.

But anyway:
Someplace where my wife and I can really "rough it" when foraging for dinner as in Langkawi...
Or where the dinghy dock comes with a bar as in Nuku'alofa...
Or has anchorages are such as in Vava'u...
Or even to grab a mooring ball off "Bloody Mary's" in Bora Bora...
And especially where we meet other sailors with stories to tell.

But then there are the thousands of places we've never been before.

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

OK, I'll share my secret island- Tetepare, the last wild island. Largest uninhabited island in the South Pacific. And it shows.

NoTies- it's a short hop from Gizo...though if I were in the area right now I'd be hanging at Agnes Lodge in Munda instead of FatBoys.

Any of the Palau islands are spectacular.

Right now, aside from boat traffic, the less popular of the Canadian Thousand Islands can't be beat. Cool, clear water, all fresh, the scent of conifers in the air....ahhhhhh.....

Vava'u I can skip. No slight to Moorings, but it's Tonga. If I did Tonga it would be Ha'apai not Vava'u. Vava'u is a bit tired, over-fished, and beat.

A bit out of the way, but Norfolk is great. Watch your beer with the locals though....

When you get there visit the unofficial Yacht Club, the "Mariner's Cafe", at Pangai, Lifuka Island, Ha'apai. The boss is a really great Polish lass! Contact on VHF ch 16.
