Seattle Bound in September

Hi all, I am heading for Seattle , Miami and Huntington Beach in September. I will spend a week In each place. Could anyone recommend Marinas for me to browse and maybe chat to like minded fellow boaters. Also I like browsing Marine shops. I have to admit I am a little obsessed about all things aquatic. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also anybody visiting Fremantle Australia I can reciprocate the gesture.
Thanks in advance .

Re: Seattle Bound in September

Seattle: Shilshole Marina in Ballard is probably the most active marina, although I'm not sure how you "browse" it. The Sloop Tavern in Ballard is a popular hangout for sailors, heck they even have their own yacht club! Fisheries Supply down the road in Fremont is sort of a porn shop for sailors.

Some of us really don't like the Seattle scene. If your into old and wooden, get a ferry up to port Townsend or Friday harbor. A lot of us are sailing about that time- if you are a good hand I bet you could bum rides all over the Salish sea. As for doing all three areas in a month: you're not going to see much.

Re: Seattle Bound in September

Heck, I say he'll have a great time!

Seattle and surrounding areas- As mentioned, Fisheries Supply is a great resource, as is LFS Marine Supply. Shilsole Marina, Elliott Bay Marina, and Bell Harbour Marina are near the downtown area.

If you have/make the time, head north to Anacortes- it's a small town with a huge marine presence.....including the 90' Northern Marine that turned turtle recently

There are a lot of shops, chandleries, and marine related businesses in Anacortes. La Conner is just a few miles away, and is worth a visit. The ferry system to the San Juan Islands will take you to Friday Harbor- one of the friendliest ports in the area.

In Seattle, in addition to what others have mentioned, the Center for Wooden Boats in South Lake Union is definitely worth a visit.

Re: Seattle Bound in September

also in Seattle, get a browse of Captains Nautical Supply. Charts Charts and more books! On the way to Shilshole Marina, stop and watch the boats go thru the Government Locks in Ballard. PS: when in Ballard, avoid trying the Lutefisk! Ya Ya Betcha!
Miami... hmmm... not sure, but Fort Lauderdale would be fun. Take a gander at Los Olas Blvd area, and the boats behind the houses and condos on the canals.

Hi guys . Thank you very much for the replies. I have just visited San Diego Marine Exchange and now have had to purchase an additional suitcase with the extra unexpected goodies. I will definitely browse Ballard on Sunday as I land around midnight on Saturday night in SeattleClick image for larger version

Re: Seattle Bound in September

Ventured down to the Lake Union Boats Affloat show to get my fix. Well I was surprised by the quality of trawler type boats on display. The only downside I noticed was with the trawlers most have wood veneers on the transonic tops and side rails which is a labour intensive maintenance task to keep up with.Click image for larger version

Re: Seattle Bound in September

Hi

As a fellow Aussie don't miss out on Port Townsend, the sailing folks are fantastic - we wintered there and the town folk adopted us. Go see Hasse and Co in the sail loft and tell them Yaraandoo sent you they will see you right for crewing or local knowledge.

Cheers Sue.
