SAN DIEGO— SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Looking for a large Sailing community in Southern California to call Home and refitting my old sailboat— in which I’d like to be in the middle of a lot of marine services who offer prof. Service service....

Looking for a 50’ slip with a rental home or apt nearby...

Thanks...

San Diego has a lovely climate, is a very yacht-intensive spot, and berths aren't easy to come by. Good luck with your search. Not sure why you want a 50' slip for a 44' boat. Also, you may find SD is pretty expensive, particularly near the water. I'm not meaning to rain on your parade, but to help you understand what I think you're going to find.

Thanks Ann— looking for Marinas then or dockage for a 44’ Sailboat— maybe I should have posted this. Appreciate any hidden GEMS someone might be aware of... Fairwinds, Skipper T

Driscoll Shelter Island wants to charge haul out and bottom paint for about $1400. Is that reasonable? suggestions?

Any input welcome.

Depends on the boat size and paint Cap'n, my last haul and paint on a 32' boat was $1800. That was for prep, 2 coats Petit Trinidad Pro with a 3rd coat at waterline and on leading edges. Different paint would have been $1400.

Stay away from Driscolls. They will run the bill up on you.

Try Shelter Island.

Re: SAN DIEGO— SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Shelter Island is the heart of the marine business in SD. Lots of marinas and marine services. I liveaboard at Half Moon and as I am a boat builder I walk across the street to Shelter Island Boat Yard for work, its a great lifestyle. The problem is its gotten very expensive. Liveaboard fees have gone through the roof. Most of the marinas are not very friendly to extensive refitting projects in their facilities. Boat yards are very expensive and do not offer long term liveaboard. Their is a place that is in transition and could possibly work for you called Driscol's wharf. Its in transition.

If money is not and issue their are lots of apartment/house rentals in Point Loma/Shelter Island.

Slips in SD are like hens teeth (at least near Shelter Island), I kept the one that came with the boat, and it sure is pricey..... apparently if you're a newby it pays to know the right people.

Re: SAN DIEGO— SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

professional service is also available in mexico.
baja naval is in direct competition with shelter island boat yard and even buys parts at same store..sdmx... with a bit less pricey boat monkeys. funny how that works. baja naval has been doing excellent work for decades. and slips are easier to find 60 miles south of san diego, and the ambiance is better in ensenada. so are the fish tacos.
