I think the San Juan Islands sailing season is from May through October.

Re: Portland to San Juans When to depart?

I used Passage Weather for my trip up the coast last August from San Francisco to Vancouver Island.

You are aware of the severe weather off the coast during the winter, right? The earliest to even bother looking would be April, and even then it could be hairy. The weather this year has allowed a stream of bad weather to come roaring across the Pacific a lot further south than "normal" but you know what they say about weather.

For a 27 footer, or for that matter any boat, you have to decide what you're gonna do once you exit the Columbia River Bar. Will you have crew? Are you planning sailing at night or only during the day. We took 13 hours from Grays Harbor to LaPush, a very long day, in August/early September with LONG daylight hours, which don't start until May or June.

Here's our log, so you can see what we did: Travels with Aquavite: San Francsico Bay to British Columbia 2016

It includes tracks/charts of the harbors.

Don't go too early, you'll get hammered.

I will have a crew. I will be looking for a weather window for a straight shot up north. I have been from bandon to portland or and it was cheating. Perfect weather and buoy 10 when we arrived at 8 pm was 2ft swells . that was august .

Personally I would wait until late April to make that jump. However if you are flexible keep an eye on the weather you may get a good window earlier. If you wish to go sooner truck that lil boat up here only takes a long day and gets more sailing in the San Juan's. .

You can sail all year round up here, you just have to dress for the weather. It's a lot quieter in the winter months which is lovely.

Winds tend to be more stable as well

Re: Portland to San Juans When to depart?

You can do the trip as day hops or overnight. If you have a schedule, as only x days of vacation, not a good idea. I did that round trip twice with my Santana 28 the next six trips I rented a trailer and trucked it to olympia WA. I-5 at 60 MPH is great cruising. I have 10 weeks off each summer.
Its all about weather, even in August it can be cold at night. Last August I moved my Cascade 42 to olympia, after 12 years of summer round trips from Portland,OR. I got tiered of that trip.
It can get very foggy, glad I have radar.

Re: Portland to San Juans When to depart?

Hi i3,

I'm up in the area. I've seen sailboats come in from Japan in Feb, others till late Nov, actually all year long, just depends on YOU. & your equipment.

One good hint as you may kno, when the fishing boats head in, hold on!

Take the internet advice your gonna get, but remember, it's free, so you get what you pay for. Some good, some really bad.

and.......enjoy the heck out of it.

If you need a hand when all comes together, yell. I may be available.

Having said that, that's once you GET here. Actually going up the OR/WA coast I wouldn't do until the spring/summer - it gets pretty knarly.
