Need Advice Key West Please

We have 35 ft Hunter sail boat coming from Marathon on Hawks Channel Ocean side---best to anchor or moorIng ball or which marina and Where--Key West area???
Also worth doing and/or recommended to do Marquis Islands we miles from Key West?
Also any other recommended anchorages between Newfoundland and Key West as our draft is 4.5 feet.
Weather calm next week.
Thanks bunches for your feedback here in advance--very much appreciated!!!!

Garrison bight has the mooring balls. Very uncomfortable in a northern. Holding in garrison bight is poor, so best to anchor elsewhere if not taking a mooring. Also garrison bight is far from everything.

Only other anchorage I've used between newfound and key west is summerland. I don't recommend it's right next door to newfound, and you need a bit of local knowledge to go through the channel. I have anchored outside the channel and held very well in the shoal area.

Also stopped at marquesas on way to dry Tortugas. Apparently some people find great scuba there. But snorkeling all I saw was grass. Didn't go into mooney harbor. Holding directly south of island very poor. Hard pack.

Re: Need Advice Key West Please

my favorite way to get to key west from marathon is the bus.

Key west is just not hospitable for people who don't want to spend a lot on marinas.

Shame.

Agreed with jasmine. The best way to see key west by boat is to moor/anchor in marathon and take the bus down. I honestly had a terrible time in key west with the boat, but that's mainly due to the fact that I was rowing the dinghy and trying to provision.
Here's an easy KW itinerary: bus down from marathon early, do fort Zach taylor and hang on the beach there or at smathers. Fill the afternoon with whatever museum visit you wish. Dinner and early dribks at schooners wharf for the live music and good company. Drink till the early morning in the all night bars. Catch the early bus back to marathon and sleep it off.

Play your cards right and it could be an attractive drinking companion with a yen for the water! Though I have never heard of that happening!

Re: Need Advice Key West Please

Spent a week on a mooring ball in Key West. Free dinghy dock right downtown and very easy to get there. Not a bad walk from the Garrison Bight dinghy dock to downtown. Heading east to a small river will take you to a spot almost across the street from Home Depot and Winn Dixie.

How anybody could suggest taking a long bus ride from Marathon to Key West instead of a five minute dinghy ride is ludicrous.

Re: Need Advice Key West Please

I believe the dinghy dock by turtle krall still wants its $5, at least according to my reading of the city website when I was there.

And describing it as a 5 min easy dinghy ride presupposes a number of things. Strong outboard (I was rowing), mild weather (garrison bight is awful in a norther), and if you're anchored close to the DT dock, that you're safe enough from neighbors, dragging boats, etc.

Garrison bight is a hoof from downtown, the fort, etc. no carts are provided like in boot key, so have fun schlepping your groceries in a backpack from the publix a mile and a half away.

Re: Need Advice Key West Please

The best way to enjoy KW is get a slip...We use City Marina in KW Bight. This is about the only place we do not anchor out. Holding is not great, dinghy ride is almost always wet. If you do dinghy be sure to have flares, it is required there and they stop you often.

Eat and Drink out at happy hours only and the money saved covers your slip cost. Best happy hour is the "Boat House" under the Commodore.

Be sure to have a picture at schooners warf. Word is it will not be around much longer.

I concur with the comments on Marathon. Great place.

Active Captain Companion provides the best user based reviews that I have found for anchorages and other cruising data.

Looking for another pretty place to work on the boat.

Re: Need Advice Key West Please

x3 svJasmine: Key West is not the greatest place if you like being on the hook. The mooring field near Fleming Key was ok, but my experience was 15 years ago. Every time we got 30 knots or more of wind, I made sure I was aboard to fend off boats dragging anchor. Others may have had ok experiences there - and it was ok for me for a while - but I found myself getting tired of Key West quickly. If you do go, get away from the tourist streets, and be sure to visit Blue Heaven, if it's still there.
