Glades Storage - FL Panthers??

Question for the community -

Have there been any other reported sightings of FL panthers in the area of the Glades Boat Storage yard? We got a report in one evening and then discounted it - maybe prematurely.

Re: Glades Storage - FL Panthers??

I don't know where the Glades Storage Yard is, but the accepted range for the remaining Florida panthers is south and west of the southern tip of Lake Okeechobee. Nonetheless, they do roam (usually to their detriment), and tracks or sightings occasionally occur outside this range, but not very far. Pete

Moore Haven area would not be an entirely surprising location for spotting a panther, although it is borderline. Pete

I should also say that I don't know that the Moore Haven area ISN'T an area where panthers are regularly spotted, only that it is on the periphery of their accepted range.

Our thought was that it was a misidentified large dog or maybe a calf but didn't get any affirmation.

Are animals more likely to push their boundaries out a little ahead of a major weather event?

I'm not a wildlife biologist (although I am, actually a different type of biologist...), but I would think the tendency would be to stay closer to home rather than range further, unless home has been destroyed. Bur I don't know for sure.

I can tell you there are Fl Panthers in South Ga.
I have seen one as a kid, and seen deer carcasses in trees, and I do not think deer climb trees.

I have never understood the having to get a house cat out of a tree.
Why?
They must be capable of getting themselves out as I have never see a cat skeleton in a tree, have you?

Nope, never have. Hmm, maybe the deer kick them out of the tree?

Re: Glades Storage - FL Panthers??

Wifey B: For about six months a year, you'll spot them in Sunrise. Mostly playing around. That six months started in mid September. Anytime they strayed toward the Tampa/St. Pete area they were very vulnerable to Lightning. They're very scared of Canadians, but then they're intimidated by Senators, Penguins, Predators, Sharks and even Disney type Ducks. So, I wouldn't worry much about those in Sunrise, but to my knowledge they don't wander where you're talking about so I'd be concerned about any breed seen there. Most have more bite that the ones in Sunrise.

The answer is yes, there are Panthers in the vicinity of Glades Boat storage and throughout the interior, although only infrequently seen as they are nocturnal. We have seen them in eastern Manatee County, for example, and had one casually saunter across the road in front of our car near sunset one night. It was a female and very unafraid of our car. I suspect she had one or more kittens near by and, with that, we discontinued the practice of leaving our dogs out during the day as our house is on the edge of a nature preserve along the Braden River. They may be shy but they definitely aren't "scaredy cats".

Re: Glades Storage - FL Panthers??

A little information on the Panther:

Males can weigh up to 160 pounds (73 kg)[3] and live within a range that includes the Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Picayune Strand State Forest, rural communities of Collier County, Florida including Golden Gate Estates, Hendry County, Florida, Lee County, Florida, Miami-Dade County, Florida and Monroe County, Florida .[4][5] This population, the only unequivocal cougar representative in the eastern United States, currently occupies 5% of its historic range[citation needed] . In the 1970s, there were an estimated 20 Florida panthers in the wild,[6] although their numbers have increased to an estimated 230 by 2017.[7]
