Re: Chartering

Assuming you are based in USA/Canada, it should be a no brainer: BVI, best weather in January, (peak season though, so most expensive charter rates), protected waters, visual navigation and short distances. With a 30+ ft boat, you can do it yourselves.

I would not hire a skipper, especially not on my honeymoon You don't need witnesses

Good luck!

Re: Chartering

Agreed. I would probably go for the BVI. Contact Sunsail (whom I have used and can personally recommend), or some other charter company and tell them you want to charter a boat. They will likely ask you your experience. Tell them, but don't start going on about how you "only" have ASA 101 and 103. Just be factual. My guess is that they will let you take a boat without any problem.

They may suggest that you pay for a skipper for a half-day, or a day, so that he can evaluate your ability to handle the boat. If so, then that's what you'll have to do. No matter, it will be a great vacation.

Re: Chartering

Belize would be another get destination in January... There is a Moorings base down there.

Been most everywhere.

BVI. Hands down. Also, try BVI Yacht Charters - Sailing Vacations with the personal attention you deserve.

I once skippered a honeymoon trip for a good friend in a similar situation. He wanted a honeymoon charter but had limited experience so invited me to skipper the charter. GF and I went and it was a great trip.

It was fun before the trip too when people would ask me, a confirmed bacehlor (then), about my vacation plans...."I'm going on a honeymoon"..."WHAT?!, you are gettimg married?"..."Nope, just going on a honeymoon". ;-)

I suggest doing the same or hiring a local captain, your honeymoon cruise will be much more pleasant that way rather than being stressed.
