I was wondering that too. US customs require everyone be present.

If you are a US Citizen, then you never need to check out, just back in.

BVI, you need to check in and out.

Re: BVI vs USVI?

Was the boat US flagged? Because US citizens can just leave whenever they want. We've never had to check out.

Re: BVI vs USVI?

I guess it depends on where you are going. It is not needed going between USVI and BVI. But I know when we were in St. Vincent and St. Lucia we had to make sure to get all the check out paperwork.

Huh?

St Thomas and St John are both in the USVI. Even for foreign flagged boats with non-US citizens that is not required.

Is 2008 the year you were here stranded on a boat in Christmas Cove with no means to get home? If so, I called you to see if there was something I could do to help, remember? From reading your posts it seems like things are going much better for you now which is great.

Re: BVI vs USVI?

I spent 3 weeks in USVI/BVI this Feb 2013. I didn't read all of the posts, so forgive me if this has already been covered but I think I can help: First, if the area weren't ruled by 2 separate countries we wouldn't be having this conversation. The only issue is dealing with customs stops, etc, which is not a big deal by the way. both USVI and BVI have gin clear water, very strong winds, great dive sites, etc. (note: on land st. t is much more congested than tortolla, both have 3rd world feel, tight, hilly roads.....but i can walk roads in tortolla and would not attempt that on st. t). So, BVI is the "Mecca" for sailors because it has many more Islands in close proximity (roughly 60) which provide lots of protected waters, and anchorages, for even beginner sailors. Remember, 20-30knots constantly, day and NIGHT is common, not for faint at heart. Even a short passage, for a beginner could be quite intense. Because BVI is "sailors heaven" there are many more charter companies, provisioning shops, marinas, dive shops, etc. to accommodate. TIP: anchorages get little protection from the wind because the hills are like the tops of mushrooms and the wind rolls right over them, best night sleep is way deep in Virgin Gorda Sound. TIP 2: when you think about bvi or USVI hotels, think Mexico, not LA...we flew in to USVI for cheap flight, then ferried to bvi, no big deal....actual added to the adventure...

There is a ferry from St John to JVD. I took it last year.

You could be at Cruz Bay in about an hour from Soper's Hole.

Re: BVI vs USVI?

Most people fly in to USVI and take the ferry to BVI. Much cheaper and still pretty convenient.

Re: BVI vs USVI?

By the time you pay for the extra hotel night due to taking the ferry, the extra for the plane ticket from BVI breaks even. In the past, I flew into USVI and out of BVI.
