Re: Are the San Blas Islands Worth it?

Kirk: I assume the new proposed fees ($5/sq ft) have never been implemented?

IMHO, new fees aside (which I think are just political posturing), its totally worth it. We've spent the last several cruising seasons in the SB and love it there. Would be back there again this seaaon, but have to tend to some shore side stuff.

Re: Are the San Blas Islands Worth it?

No, not for private yachts, just $20 per boat and $20 each person on board, every month. Charter boats may be another story .

Re: Are the San Blas Islands Worth it?

We just left the San Blas a week ago. It's a neat spot that reminds us of some of the areas of the South Pacific we have spent time in. Legally no spear or pole fishing allowed. If you like to get the shopping bus once a week or like to enjoy some good restaurants then this is not the place for you..We enjoyed the experience. The Guna Indians are nice people, easy to get along with and generally the anchorages are good. We sailed further east than most folks and rarely saw other boats as most boats hang around the western areas so it is a place you can have some solitude if you wish. We did run into a couple of cruisers that were only staying a couple of weeks and they did not check in and didn't pay the fees, not our style but it does go on. If I was just passing through and stopped in the area for a few days I might not check in either but for a couple three weeks I would check in and pay the fees. Enjoy your trip, doesn't make sense to be this close and not visit the area.

Re: Are the San Blas Islands Worth it?

We spent some time in E San Blas last year too. Really enjoyed it. Very local, lightly visited by cruisers.

The rainy and lightening season isn't over till the end of Nov. Sometime in Dec the trades kick in and can blow hard for a long time.

Weather is decent, warm winds. A little more cloud than the windward/leewards. Rain showers from time to time but overall very comfy and warm. It's nice to get a little rain to get all the salt off the boat. Stop in a colombia and do a major provisioning as there is little to buy there. Very lay back and by the way while it hasn't been a problem they have salt water crocks in several areas, cruising friends took some pictures.

Re: Are the San Blas Islands Worth it?

Monte,
Meant to mention that if you have open cpn you can download Eric Bauhaus charts, they are the only ones that are accurate in this area. If I were you I would plan on spending some time in Colombia, we are going to return there via land as on reflection we didn't spend enough time there. It gives you a feeling of Europe in the Med and has some real culture that is missing in the wind wards and leewards. Cheers, Robert

Of course you do have the "veggie boats" which are very handy in the SB. Some even carry beer, wine, and propane.

Is it worth paying the 500+ dollars for a 2 week visit?

Let the discussion begin
Why do everyone Think that you have to pay crazy amount of Money to be in San Blas? Must be a rumor...
We spent 4 weeks in San Blas, 200 dollars for checkin in Panama and about 10 to 20 to the indians...
Go there, best Place so far in West Caribeen!

What is the best time to visit the islands, sailing-wise, spearfishing-wise, snorkeling-wise?
