Three Hurricanes in a Row in One View from Space Irma Katia Jose

This video, just released this morning, SEPT 8 2017, shows THREE hurricanes in a row close to North America and in the Caribbean, Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricanes Katia, Irma, and Jose.

Regarding Irma, this quote from a NASA webpage advises to remember the width of this hurricane and the wind speeds seen.

"Irma's Area of Maximum Sustained Winds Like a Wide Tornado

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km). Maximum sustained winds are near 150 mph (240 kph) with higher gusts.

Scott Braun, research meteorologist at NASA Goddard said that "Hurricane force winds mean greater than 64 knots and tropical storm force winds are greater than 34 knots. The actual diameter of hurricane force winds is 120 miles. However, that is just for greater than 64 knots. The area with greater than 150 mph wind will be smaller."

The area of maximum sustained winds near 150 mph fluctuate but on average have been about 25 miles out from the eye. Using that as average, if you think of the power of these rotating winds compared to a tornado, it would be would be similar to a 50-mile wide F2 tornado on the Fujita Scale (with maximum winds between 113 and 157 mph)."

And look at all the boats (with AIS) running from the storm.

...and the current "most likely" track calls for it to pass through our county in central Florida on Sunday. Going to be an interesting weekend.

It's unusual to see boats heading north for the winter.

Typoon Soudelor in 2015 was like this as well. Very small and powerful, with a 12-mile wide eye and 180mph reported wind (our anemometer recorded 205mph before flying apart). The center of the eyewall passed directly over our house, with the wind stopping and stars coming out before the Southern wall, which carried the most damaging wind, slammed into us. There was evidence of tornado-like damage in many areas of Saipan.

The government and collective community of the CNMI, with generous assistance from FEMA, NGOs and other U.S. state governments, did an amazing job effecting an extremely fast recovery.

The CNMI sent a team to Houston to help with recovery efforts from hurricane Harvey; I hope that the international community will come together to quickly provide all that is needed to assist those affected by Irma in rebuilding their islands.

They say lighting doesn't strike in the same place twice. I wonder if the same goes for hurricanes? 🤔

The photo image below is a visual comparison of Hurricanes Andrew and Irma. Scaled image composite by a meteorologist.

"Andrew was one of the most destructive hurricanes to ever hit Florida. The storm left 65 people dead, destroyed more than 63,500 houses, damaged more than 124,000 others, and caused $26.5 billion in total damages. "

----------------------

"Deadly hurricane Irma is "bigger, faster and stronger" than Hurricane Andrew, the devastating Category 5 hurricane that caused major damage in the Sunshine State a quarter-century ago, Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned on Wednesday.

Andrew, which made landfall in Homestead, Fla., in 1992, left a path of destruction, costing an adjusted $47.8 billion in damage and leaving 65 dead. Another 43 indirect deaths were attributed to Andrew, according to Weather.com.

It was one of only three Category 5 hurricanes on record to make landfall in the continental United States."

Re: Three Hurricanes in a Row in One View from Space Irma Katia Jose

That visual comparing size of Andrew to Irma is very effective.

Sadly the news and media coverage seems to focus more on the wind speed strength and does not give enough emphasis to the danger of the storm surge (IMHO).

A few of our local geologists have speculated that the weight of the water displacement from the storm surge, over such a wide area, may be affecting the faultlines.

The hurricanes we experienced when I was a child were nothing like these monsters. Mother Nature reinforcing who's boss.

My best wishes and thoughts to all in the affected zones.

Unfortunately the majority of people who will be effected dont have a clue about storm surge. Nor will it affect them in a real plausable way other than flooding. The mariners in the area do understand about it and are taking all the measures they can to try to mitigate the effects. I heard several days ago that surge of 20-25 ft are likely. That will place the keys under several feet of water not to mention how much of the mainland in florida is just mere feet above sea level.

This thing needs to turn pretty soon or it's going in the gulf. Look out Tallahassee! Then comes Jose.........
Although,so far, they say Jose suppose to move north and die out in the Atlantic.
