Southern Ocean Wind Buoy Records 24 Metres

The New Zealand MetService recently launched some weather monitoring buoys for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, This week a buoy recorded a 23.8 metre wave (approx. 78 feet). The buoy is located in the vicinity of Campbell Island.

At a tad over 100 square kms, Campbell is an uninhabited subantarctic island situated 52.5163° S, 169.1552° E, about 650kms south of Invercargill.

Here’s a link to the news story. You’ll see there links to other stories about the buoys and their recent launching too. The big wave wasn’t am isloted occurrence, nor was it a freak ‘rogue’ wave. Just business as usual in the Southern Ocean.

And for the trivia lovers, the island is reputed to have the world's most remote tree, a solitary 100-year-old Sitka spruce.
