Irene Making Landfall - Is 80 Miles Far Enough Away ?

it now looks like when it hits land its going to be a category 1 possibly 2 , with a big surge. Not TO bad I hope.

Mind you I've been to the outer scotish isles and the NW of Ireland, they get 60-70 mph winds nearly every week, and thats in the summer. ( mind you few people live there......!) ogh and nobody but nobody there builds anywhere near the Atlantic coast. shoreline. It always amazes me how coastal communities in the US are often virtually on the water line. This side of teh pond exposed as it is the Atlantic would sweep that away every Monday !!

NEW YORK STATE CANAL SYSTEM NOTICE TO MARINERS

HURRICANE IRENE 0845 - August 26, 2011

Mariners are advised that the potential for hurricane force winds and
excessively heavy rainfall exists along portions of the Canal System within
the next 72 hours.

Current forecasts indicate that the most severe impacts will be in the
eastern part of the Canal System, east of Oneida Lake. Widespread flooding
and closures of the Canal System in these areas are possible within the next
72 hours.

Mariners on the eastern Erie Canal between Oneida Lake and Waterford, and
the Champlain Canal, should take all possible measures to secure their
vessels in safe locations.

The Waterford Flight (Lock E-2 to E-6) will be opened as “safe harbor” for
vessel traffic wishing to moor beginning at 7 AM, Saturday, August 27th.
Water levels do not fluctuate within the Waterford Flight when flooding is
occurring on the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. All permit and vessel pass
requirements will be waived for the duration of the event.

Now that my head is out of the sand (thanks Shaun) and the latest weather report is out, I would be suprised if it made landfall as a hurricane at all. Looks like it may be a tropical storm by then. Like most of us here, I am hoping for the best. By the way, my boat was pulled Wednesday. I just dont feel like tending dock lines in the rain and wind anymore.

I have been flying over, around and through parts of Irene all day. It's a powerful storm that is creating an anticyclonic flow around it's western edges. Temps were 3 degrees C warmer (-33C to -35C) in areas of the outer bands than in adjacent airspace at FL320 or FL320. Winds in the outer bands were not exceptionally high, on the order of 35 to 50 knots from the northeast inside the outer band and sheared to the southeast at comparable velocity when exiciting a band. When crossing into or out of the outer bands, there was light to moderate turbulence associated with the transition. I am scheduled to try to make it to Philly tommorrow, that may be problematic. I wish I was at home sailing or in the Carribean helping Mark with his fish problem.

destructive winds are really only 100-150 miles of the center,so far it is following the continental shelf and dont see that changing,so should stay offshore.
any damage is more likely to be from,tidal rise,flooding and rain than wind on the current weather models.

It is nice to be down here in virtually no wind, no weather and 1,000nms away from a Hurricane.

Just hope it stays like that here.

The USA experimented with seeding hurricanes and were very sucessful in dropping wind speeds for a few hours. Don't know why they stopped the research.

Mark, A good friend of mine worked for NOAA running their computers for the Hurricane Hunter Airplanes. He told me the story of seeding hurricanes. The reason they quit was not because it didn't work, but they were afraid that if they kept messing with hurricanes, someone would blame them for hurricane damage and sue them. There was talk of dropping a nuke into a hurricane back in the 1950's. Thank goodness they didn't. Can you imagine a radioactive hurricane running up the east coast?

I agree, i remember coming in past the Needles off the I.O.W with gusts registered at Needles light house of 90knots. And also being in sustained 50 plus in the Irish sea. No evacuations, but also the geography is hugely different as is the anticylone it´s self.

The big difference is the surge brought with the hurricane to the low lying lands, its madness to build there. When you look at coastlines which are constantly battered by plus 50knots and the accompanying seas its generally steep cliff!! with the odd house on top, not communities of 2+ million.

Hope every one at sea is safe, and those in holes are well moored!

I grew up in Garden City and remember those storms! In the days leading up to the storms and the days following their passage we would go down to the south shore to surf in what were, for the east coast, BIG waves. If you're in a coastal area don't trifle with storm surge.
