Re: Hurricane Florence

Suijin, like I thought, Wednesday looks to be your best day to try and move South and over to AH harbor. Thursday should be ok too, but higher winds and swells. Good vis both days, just follow the Seastreak ferry route over, as they do the cattle run both ways all day.

Best of luck to those who are anywhere near the LZ on this one. Lord only knows I ve been through my share of all the East Coasters since 1968! Most sucked bigly!

I also second Levi Cowan as your hurricane season source of information. He is absolutely fantastic; clear, concise, short discussions, talks about the **** that needs discussing, doesn't talk about irrelevant crap, and he teaches you a lot while you listen to his podcast (or youtubecast I would say). He doesn't add "drama" to anything, he doesn't beat around the bush with useless info (like that guy that got posted before in this thread, Joe whoknowwhat). Levi Cowan is by far the best.

Thank you for posting that link. I had to replace my phone so I lost that. now it's back on my home screen. clear and concise, up-to-date. Two thumbs up.

Re: Hurricane Florence

Gene I’m going to leave the boat in Port Washington on a mooring. $25/day with two free days. AH was double that.

That's what I would probably do in your position Suijin.

Re: Hurricane Florence

When looking at NHC forecasts, read the "discussion" first. If the crew of the Fantome (lost in Hurricane Mitch 1998) had, they would have seen NHC's clear confession that they had little data, and little confidence in their "forecast." The ship might have stayed in Belize, or Omoa. I detailed the story, and the lessons learned, in "The Ship and The Storm."

When I moved to New Orleans on Aug. 1, 2005, 28 days before Katrina, and saw the models lining up over my house, I got out of town. The house ended up under water for a month. That's why I live in Vermont now.

Great, glad you found a safe location to leave your vessel until your return from your trip. AH is not cheap, but it is a higher quality marina and port than most in NJ as you know.

Appears florence will drive straight into Raliegh,NC and not affect areas North of the Chessie' from my interpretation of the current data.

Re: Hurricane Florence

Ugh I have a bunch of friends in Oriental who live right on the water. Given how wind driven the water level is on the Neuse I think a lot of them will be underwater. Would not be surprised if water goes up 8’, which will submerge half the town.

Re: Hurricane Florence

People do need to take a look at the probable inundation functionality of NHC

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/gra...ation#contents

I found out while watching Levi Cowan of course. But thought it was very useful, specially in an area of estuary like the Oriental NC area is.

Watch out, America! #HurricaneFlorence is so enormous, we could only capture her with a super wide-angle lens from the @Space_Station, 400 km directly above the eye. Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you. #Horizons pic.twitter.com/ovZozsncfh

Re: Hurricane Florence

I just read that they are expecting the storm surge to be 16 feet for the Carolinas. It sort of means that 20 inches of rain they also anticipate will have a hard time draining away. Most doorways are 8 ft. tall; that's very life threatening storm surge, for a long ways inland.

I sure hope folks understand just how important evacuation of the low lying areas is going to be for them, and to not leave it too late.
