help with the weather equipments advise

hello,It's Sofia,I am planning to sail around world with my husband by lagoon 440 in the next two year,we are preparing our boat now。

now we are in Turkey ,next month sail to Crete, if you are around, welcome to
our boat ,to have a beer together 😄。

and for the weather , what kind of equipments could be a good solution
to get weather information without internet work。

because our english is not so good, some time VHF is not clear enough。

I know Navtex, is there other choice?
or is there any brand to recommend, and in Europe maybe some website
is good for buying it with discount? second hand maybe cheaper。

Re: help with the weather equipments advise

Sofia:

You will get many opinions on this, but for most the practical solutions are 2:

1. An SSB (Single SideBand) radio, opened up for HAM operations (requires a HAM license) along with a Pactor modem. This allows e-mail, weather reports and weather fax reception via computer, along with 2-way communications world wide. Many/Most world cruisers have SSB radios.

2. A Satellite phone with data/wifi connection. With this you also get e-mail, weather and weather faxes. Also worldwide communications, but no "broadcast" capabilities (such as desired for Mayday or other emergency alerts.)

Neither is inexpensive. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. If you can afford it, having both allows significant redundancy.

Have fun

The Garmin InReach can provide weather via satellite, along with text and tracking.
