From CNN: Several passengers hurt as cruise ship tilts when hit by sudden 115 mph gus

Interesting story. Microburst? Or just a (to people inside) sudden, squall?

Hard to imagine how such a beautiful, streamlined vessel could be listed by a 115 mph broadside gust.

Microburst or not, the gust was likely associated with a strong cold front passing through the area at the time.

It happens in that area.. been knocked down by a gust that came out of nowhere on a Roberts 54.. sea's had been flat and no wind for a few hours when the gust hit us from the N putting the main in the water.
Not 115mph but at least 50+kts.

Re: From CNN: Several passengers hurt as cruise ship tilts when hit by sudden 115 mph

there had been strong winds to almost 100 mph in upstate ny. naturally no one would consider these might be an issue on water.
oh thats right. weather suddenly changes when over water.no more strong winds.
this incident goes along with the weather n y state has been experiencing. my cousins are being blown off mountain tops in upstate. mt washington, nh, had 100 mph plus measured just this past week. timeline is about good for the same issue experienced there. seems a windy winter....

Not much in the news about where it was. I also wonder if 115 was measured or just a guess.

why would they have to guess? Surely their wind instruments will have shown them the max wind, just as we can see it on our more modest sized boats. Dont think the journalists did their homework.

That is true, though the highest recorded I heard was 76mph. Note though Upstate NY had three days notice. Trucks and vans were banned from major highways and bridges. Since the bays are frozen, the only boats out are iceboats, and we sat this one out.

I think we've all seen winds go from zero to 60+, both in thunderstorms and on the face of cold fronts. Neither are unpredicted, though it's not unusual for both to be far more severe than predicted.

We've discussed microbursts in the past. In most cases they were unexpected- yet possible. If there's a storm, there's a chance of microbursts. If there's a hard-faced cold front, it's possible that one area has a faster rise than others. 99% of the time neither happen, but the possibility existed.

I've never experienced a 60+mph change that I could not look back on and say "oh yeah, I suppose I should have known that could be possible."

I think my friend, Boatman 61 was making a joke. No sense of humor here, just like in the Democrat controlled Congress.

These new ships are just about as ugly as it gets. Slab-sided horizontal condos. I surprised one hasn't been rolled.

ABC Good Morning America today. Lots of passenger video clips. They say 45 degrees for 5 minutes. That must be close to a capsize. I wonder if they do stability tests on these impossibly huge ugly vessels.
