Re: For Sale: 1969 Mariner 31 Ketch, Freshly Restored !

She has an old fashioned schooner style wheel. Kind of cool actually, to sit behind it on the box and steer this old girl. It's small and of teak with spokes.

We had to put her on hold for a bit but have started back on her this week.

Re: For Sale: 1969 Mariner 31 Ketch, Freshly Restored !

Charlie, I was wondering if you could do me a favour?

I'm contemplating how I want to build the galley on Sabre Dance, and was hoping you could get the counter top dimensions for me, with the stove as well? Length, width etc of each section?

This project has been put on hold temporarily while we do some paying work so we can reload funds for it.

Re: For Sale: 1969 Mariner 31 Ketch, Freshly Restored !

The Mariner 31s came with bronze double worm gear steering. Forward facing wood ship's wheel, you sit on the box with the wheel in front of you. Very salty. The interior wood is hand selected Phillipine mahogany that Clair bought from Red China through Hong Kong, the earliest known case of wood laundering. The masts and spars came from the same side of the same tree(sitka spruce). Clair was very proud of this. They were glued with recorsinal(sp)

Wish I'd seen this thread a month ago when I started looking for boats! Beautiful. Best of luck with the sale!

Pulled the tarps off and inspected her today. Found some things we didn't like and will be addressing. I'm not selling a boat with half-assed work done on it...

Re: For Sale: 1969 Mariner 31 Ketch, Freshly Restored !

Aloha Charlie,
Can't wait to see some new photos of this one. She looks so much like my Mariner 35 woody except she has a spoon bow instead of the clipper which just means that for a 31 she has only two less feet for waterline.
kind regards,

John, I found a couple of spots in the aft house bulkhead to address. I also found out that she's hull number two.

Re: For Sale: 1969 Mariner 31 Ketch, Freshly Restored !

Aloha Charlie,
Unfortunately that was the problem with most the old Mariners. I've seen cockpits rebuilt, cabin sides redone and the back of cabins. I don't know if the original builders used inferior ply or maybe fittings were not bedded properly but it is a common problem.
The transom on my 35 started to delaminate so it too could be a problem if it is ply. Yours is glass so not as much a problem.
In our area we get a lot of rain so even the beautiful spruce masts have to be checked frequently.
The ones that have been restored like you are doing are a great boat but buyers of these boats need to be cautious about checking out soft spots.
Wow, hull number 2. That's great.
kind regards,
