I'd just like to say thanks to them for helping support the network. I run a business, and find it interesting how many folks want us to conform to their every wish. We all do the best we can.

I wish you guys luck, profit, and fair winds.

Jeff

Let me describe the millenicom.com 4G service on the Verizon network: you get 20Gbyte/month for $70 using a mifi router. When you want to stop the service you tell them and it just stops. When you want it again, you tell them, pay $20 re-activation fee and you're online again. Works pretty good.

I do wonder how "better service" is achieved when you don't have your own network?

On the millenicom/verizon setup...how extensively have you used it throughout the Caribbean?

Never. In the Caribbean, I do it like Mark Cole and all other "stay-a-while" cruisers I know: local SIM.

It takes a rat-race kind of person to enjoy paying so much more for a roaming service IMHO.

Jedi, how about PR - any idea about coverage? Would you consider the millenicom a local SIM ?

millenicom is USA only but for there it is a local (non-SIM) solution. You buy the USB-modem or the Mifi gadget in that case.

Here in Panama, you can get a Digicel SIM for $2 or a C&W SIM for $1 I think. I use C&W pre-paid and it is like $0.50 per day unlimited use when you commit for a month ($15)

Re: Caribbean Wide Affordable Internet Service

I am using the Axxess Direct internet connection and its working well on my wanderings.
Sure, its not as cheap as some Western Caribbean sim cards, but this is a specialst connection to link all the myriad of countries in the eastern Caribbean, seamlessly. Something thats not been available before except with sat coms.

So in the last few weeks I have gone from St Martin to St Barts via Isle Fourchue and had seamless transitions between countries. Next up I'm off to try it out around the BVIs.

If you are staying a few months in each country then its fine to get a sim in each country, but for the mobile cruiser who is transiting the islands or doing a few days in each, then this is the way to go

Re: Caribbean Wide Affordable Internet Service

We talked with Dennis at Axxess Marine while in St. Martin this winter and it seems as if he has finally put together a package with appeal to some cruisers. I believe they have a 10G cellular data plan for $120 a month with mostly seamless coverage while sailing down island in the Caribbean. With some family visits we never got south of St. Barth's this past season so can't vouch for everywhere but believe it should work pretty well. If interested you should email or call Dennis and check out there web site to see the different equipment for set up on small boats like ours as until recently they specialized on the large yacht market.
I have nothing to do with the company but have been on the lookout continually for the past ten years in the caribbean for wifi signals etc., and have come to the conclusion that the money should go into some kind of 3g data system for the boat

Re: Caribbean Wide Affordable Internet Service

I really don't see where offering a 10GB or 20GB a month plan makes a lot of sense in the Carib. Most of the cell data connections are so slow that you'll never get near the limit over a month. Plus, unlike the US, for some of the local data plans that you purchase, say 1GB in 14 days, if you go over the 1GB limit they don't charge more or shut you off, they just 'limit' your download speed. Since it is already so slow, you won't even notice the limit.

Re: Caribbean Wide Affordable Internet Service

For those that is interested we offer the following data service.
10GB unlimited 4G Caribbean wide data service. Speeds slow down to 2G (edge) after 10GB but continue to work for a full 30 days.

This works in all of the following islands.

Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire,The British Virgin Islands, The Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Panama, St Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos, St. Martin, St Maarten and St. Barth

Speeds are HSPA+ in the locations that are bold - average download speed is 2.5Mbps. Example BVI easily gets 5Mbps.

This my not be for everybody but for those who want some comfort in being connected in all of these locations its a great service.
One Sim, one account all of the islands covered.

The Sims are for sale in Island Water World and can be activated and suspended at any time. No longterm contracts.
