Yamaha Generator

My EF1000 stopped working properly. It will only start if I disconnect the internal connector between the control box and the generator. Once it's running, I can reconnect and it will continue to run but as if it's under load. This is with nothing plugged in of course. A new control box costs only slightly less then a new generator. Any help would be appreciated.
