Xantrex Link Lite Capabilities

I bought a Link Lite to install as part of my electrical upgrade. My electrician told me today that without the additional shunt (another $100) this unit will not keep track of amps going in and out of the house bank (which is why I bought this unit in the first place), so what I have amounts to an expensive voltmeter.

I'm skeptical, but tried to get some information online. A quick web-search has not been helpful.

Anyone know what this unit will do without the shunt, and what capabilities the shunt adds? If it's bad news, I guess I'm going to have to pony up the Franklin to get what I want.

All current measuring devices which are required to measure substantial current is done by creating a small voltage drop across a very low resistance. This is a shunt which is a very precise resistance matched or programed to the measuring instrument. Your Link can only measure voltage but the voltage through the shunt is interpreted as current. You need the shunt.

the linklite comes with a shunt.


without the shunt, it's just a pricy volt gauge.
