Wow - Induction Cooktop

I picked up a 2 burner induction cooktop at Aldi for 79 Euro

Tested it yesterday against the gas cooktop at home.

Same pot, same qty of water - about 1L

Induction had it to "just finger bearable" whilst gas was "cool"
Induction had it boiling whilst gas was "just finger bearable"

Wow it's fast, and no waste cabin heating / gas moisture.

Interesting. What was your power source? Mains, generator or battery/inverter?

Re: Wow - Induction Cooktop

We’ve been using induction cooktops for six years, the reaction from those newly introduced seems universal....WOW!

We use nearly all solar for power generation via a 2500w inverter. Here’s some figures from last night generated for another thread:

Cook three fried eggs medium setting for five minutes: 2Ah

One fried steak on high for 5 minutes: 4Ah (would have been the same for two steaks)

Off subject: Nespresso machine used for 1 cup of coffee: .4Ah

Doesn't really tell us much. What voltage?

I've got a big pot of savoury mince on mine at the moment. Simmering at 200W. Figure about 100Wh total or about 8Ah @ 12V nominal. Add a couple more for the initial browning, so 10Ah total.

Re: Wow - Induction Cooktop

Don't forget that an induction cooktop requires the right kind of pot or pan to be effective. My sister has one and loves it, but she did have to replace some of her cookware.

Ken and Stu, which units do y’all have? I would love to ditch the propane.

Re: Wow - Induction Cooktop

The power source was not relevant to NFBR's experiment which was to compare the efficiency of induction to gas in a given practical situation.
The results clearly show the advantage to Induction with the added benefits of
"no waste cabin heating / gas moisture"
Power and Gas costs and availability were not part of the experiment and remain to be assessed by individual preference and requirements.

Take a magnet, if it sticks to the bottom of the pot it will work....more or less if it really sticks it will work better....

Re: Wow - Induction Cooktop

Also if people can talk brands.......I use a cheap little $150 portable, I'm thinking about a 2 burner unit to gimble will spend up to $500-600 for a good one, I looked at a Wolfe but it didn't look like it would handle a marine installation.....

We use two NuWave cooktops which can be purchased online or at Walmat for about $80 each. Walmart also has other kinds, we purchased two square units from them because they fit better on the 62 for about $89 each.

Re: Wow - Induction Cooktop

I have looked at these and they might be viable.

And device that creates an electromagnetic field needs to be well-isolated from all compasses and navigational devices that use a compass.
Music speakers have big magnets and marine versions are usually shielded to keep the fields from interfering with the Earth's line of flux.

Maybe check how much the induction affects a handheld compass and what distance. Or just keep the induction burner off during navigation.

Just some thoughts, Maybe others here know more and will comment.

They work on induction, so, as far as I know, there has to be steel involved, as iron is magnetic. It could be a simple steel plate embedded in the bottom of an aluminium pan, for example.

I now find myself wondering if a thin steel plate placed between the induction cooker and an aluminium pan would also work. Does anybody know?
