Wind Gen Pole Speed Wobbles..

Hi Again.
I just had a Airbreeze wind gen fitted. It works ok but at certain wind strengths the pole develops a wobble, like a skateboard down a big hill, speed wobbles... at 10-15 knots..
It shakes the attachment points a bit and sends a little wobble through the boat and occasionally seems to knock the gen out of balance and it stops spinning. Annoying..yeah
I think its because the support pole braces are attached to stanchions and davits, rather than the hull, so I guess I will have to attach them directly to the hull.
As it is it allows access via the rear step to the swim ladder, if I move it down it will mean stepping over or under the support.
Anyone have any ideas how to brace it properly to eliminate the wobble without making it look like a scaffolding tower...
Thanks
Monte

Re: Wind Gen Pole Speed Wobbles..

Its wobbling because your blades are unbalanced or not all in the same plane.

Re: Wind Gen Pole Speed Wobbles..

Check the distance between the tips of the blades...I bet they are off a bit...

Re: Wind Gen Pole Speed Wobbles..

distances between tips
977 1005 995
All blades were tight but I will adjust to make them all 992 and see if that helps
Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know if it helps when theres some wind

Re: Wind Gen Pole Speed Wobbles..

Does it wobble at all point of the compass, or only when the wind is from certain directions?

How flexy are those spindly rods, especially the upright?

How did the manufacturer balance the blades to make up for variations in the materials?

Would it be possible to take the prop to a tyre-fitter to see at what point the imbalance is centred?

Just musing.....

Re: Wind Gen Pole Speed Wobbles..

wow R2boatm I think I owe you a beer or three..seems to have fixed it. I havnt had over 10 knots yet but its running much smoother with no wobble at all now that I changed the tips to be equal . Actually I owe you about 24 beers because you saved me rebuilding the whole mast and strengthening the whole pole which for sure would have been a major job and a MAJOR pain in the ass.
Awsome brains trust on CF!
