Why I don't trust experts: The Fridge
I have a fridge, a freezer + adjacent cool zone container
A honest, experienced technician (he delivers industrial plants and has decades of experience, 28 workers...) insisted on a pair of K35 compressors, whilst I chose K35+K50 combo.
So far, so good
K50 DRIVES freezer from 20℃ down to -13℃ in 15' (empty) and I may have 5kg of ice in 24h. I rarely use it.
But when you need, here you are!
K35 runs the fridge to 8℃ in 45', and has light consumption for ongoing use.
The cool zone is taken from freezer down to +8℃
Perfect combo and results, unattainable otherwise.
Thus, read title of thread again, and f... the "experts"
PS old eutectic plates and 1kg gas were replaced by 150g (5oz.) of modern gas. Inertia is wrong concept in cooling. Insulation +fans inside, and onto compressors, is key

Frigoboat has 3 models
K35
K50
K80
consumption/amperage somewhat in proportion. So silent, barely detectable (I added led light to check running..)
18 months ago, roughly 3200eur
55% hardware
20% bronze keel cooler (cool!!)
20% manpower (mostly to eradicate legacy plates..)
5% thermostats (#3)

Re: Why i don't trust experts: The Fridge
We had a local independent Frigoboat technician take our double freezer compressors (only one was working), we purchased two new compressors for a total cost of 1100 euros and had him build us a replica of the existing double compressors. Now we have a spare compressor with the total cost of now having a new warrantied double compressor freezer unit 1600 euros. That was his idea, instead of spending over 3000 euros for the replacement unit.
We found a good tech.

We've had good luck in Garrucha, Spain, again in Palma, Mallorca, Mahon, Menorca, Here in Olbia, Sardinia there's no problem finding honest low cost help. Plus in each case, they show up when they say they're going to show up. As long as we stay away from the large shipyards, which is where we've run into expensive cost over runs. But even with the shipyards, we found a very honest place in Elba, Italy.
Usually, we've had the best luck by asking the marina managers because they know the local independent guys, and they want us to be pleased with the service and return to use their marina again. Marine stores can also be a good source. But here in Sardinia, I'm surrounded by good people.

Boat is 1989..... I learnt that legacy is usually an impediment, beyond the 15/20y span.
1600eur:
Exactly the cost of 2xK35, installed
My pipes had been flooded by salt water, since a very wise French PO had let the keel cooling hose in CUPRO-NICKEL going GRUYERE over time.
(Basically, it acted as zinc...)
Worst example of negligence, never seen anything alike, told me the Frigoboat tech staff, in a decade
Beware the French, that one at least :-)

When alone I use no fridge.
System is ON only when the "FEMALE ON BOARD" red alert flag rules the way

Re: Why i don't trust experts: The Fridge
Thanks Kenomac! I am in Italy too, in Liguria, but so far had no luck - I am being quoted rediculous prices for a complete change of everything even though old compressor is still fine and only needs new gaskets...

Re: Why i don't trust experts: The Fridge
Leap frog elsewhere!
Liguria is more expensive than saint Tropez or Antibes
Btw, Frigoboat is based there....
Buy gasket, install, ask someone to refill gas

You're not that far away. If you PM me your Italian phone number, or If you like I can PM Igor's phone number to you and maybe he can assist you with your problem. He speaks English, but if you speak Italian, that's even better.

Re: Why i don't trust experts: The Fridge
The older i get the less i can comprehend what folks are talking about. We used old refrig compressors to run our frig and icebox. Went through two sets of them(three total) in 30 years. When one failed we got another from an appliance place(used of course). Dirt cheap and reliable. Most ports around the world have used appliance shops with plenty of used compressors.

Re: Why i don't trust experts: The Fridge
So, the problem with old used compressor's is the gas used, I don't know about Europe, but in the USA, you can't buy R 12 or now R 22 and the blends are not all that great, plus the new compressors are much more efficient with the new electronic modules.

..with all due respect... I reach -28℃ at ease,, with minimal amount of gas (1/8), no hand made SS plates (10kg) and 6-8Ah consumption
My previous set was installed in 1989, nextwill be in 2040 approx. :-)
