Which genset

Plan on installing a small genset on a Sweden Yachts 390. Have found four that will fit in the designated space but not sure which is more reliable, etc... Kubota engines sold by Phasor and NextGen; vs Farymann sold by Entec West or Central Maine Diesel.
Hope to get some advice.

Phasor is a good unit is theory but the manufacturer provides terrible asssitance. In the three years since I bought my boat (the Phasor came with it) I've been without a generator more than with one that works. Not because it's poor quality but due to wrong parts, bad parts and misinformation. Don't buy one.

I have a next gen. 5.5 kw. Light weight is the key but I don't use continuously. For continuous use would consider a northern lights etc

Oops forgot to mention. The kubota is the same they use on refrigeration trucks all over. So I guess designed to run pretty hard.

NextGen is good. Have friends who love them. I am using Entec West that came with the boat and beginning to learn its peculiarity of a high rpm Farrymann. Continuous max power is about 70% of max power.

For a compact, light weight generator the Nextgen I think is hard to beat. From a number of reports the marinization of the Kubota block by Nextgen seems to be better done than the Phasor and I hear very good reports on their customer service and support.

The only negative I have heard, one CF member reports that the output waveform is not very clean under low loads and his Victron inverter will not kick in unless he first puts a bit of resistive load on the Nextgen.

If/when I add a built in generator I will probably go with the Nextgen.

Nextgen has gone to a new gen head, I believe it had to do with the old one no longer being able to have a drive output for them to run the water pump">raw water pump?
Anyway I don't know if this has cleaned up the power or not, on their website they had a note that said if you use an inverter / charger, call them when you place the order. When I ordered mine I was told that's no longer an issue with the new gen head. I've yet to install my 3.5, so I can't comment yet.

Thanks for the update on the Nextgen. I did have in the back of my mind that someone (probably you) had commented on this in a previous discussion.

So hurry up and get the thing installed so you can give us a full report on the new unit. Do you have an inverter to go with it? If not, you need to buy one so your test for the forum is complete.

I don't have an inverter / charger and may never, will have to see how the genset handles the start up surges first, I think it won't need one, maybe. Got to glass in a shelf first to mount the thing on, already have done the thru-hull when the bottom was re-done
Best thing would be to call Nexgen direct and ask them, they seemed to not mind questions from a potential customer

Having had an Onan genset for quite a few years, it was time to replace it. And I found the Beta-Marine genset to be the most attractive of all the various brands and models I could find in the eastern USA. See:

It uses the Kubota engine but with some really nice and intelligent choices for accessories. And the price was very reasonable.

Beta would be my first choice if they offered a smaller genset. Smallest one I see on their website is 9kW. More than double what I would ever need.

Yes - I just looked and the Beta-Marine dealer in North Carolina is not listing gensets on his website. But that is where I got mine almost 10 years ago and at that time they did have smaller units than 9KW (about 40 amps at 240 volts). There are generator distributors in southeast Florida which have some very attractive prices. That area of Florida is a major nexus for power boats and sailboats so most everything can be obtained there at competitive prices.

Entec has served us well for about 10 years. Get the optional sea water and fresh water pumps, mount capacitor outside the enclosure.
