Which Generator?

My Onan 6.5 MCCK is shot. I'm looking at a couple of used generators to replace it with and I am faced with a tough decision. Both generators are literally the same price so no advantage there.

The first one is an Onan 6.5 MCCK that has been completely gone through. New gaskets everywhere, new ignition, rebuilt carb, and even fresh paint. The advantage is that it is a direct replacement. No mods necessary. It also runs at 1800 RPM. The disadvantage is it's age. Parts for the MCCK's are getting harder to find.

The second one is a Westerbeke 7.2 BCGTC with 400 hrs. Can see and hear it run and it looks to be in very good shape. The advantage is that it is a newer model and parts and service are readily available. The disadvantage is that some modifications will be necessary to install. Physically it's the same size but wiring and remote panel issues will have to be worked out as well as some exhaust issues. It also runs at 3600 RPM so I expect it to be noisier.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Thanks,

John

Re: Which Generator?

It's a tough choice. I'm not too found of Westerbekes because they charge an arm, a leg and several digits for the parts. They might be more readily available but you will pay.

Can you keep the old Onan for spare parts? I would lean in that direction.

I was going to recommend Northern Lights until I realized the OP is running gas not diesel.

Oh bummer... I don't know Onans or Westerbekes by models.

Well actually neither do I, but when he mentioned the ignition and a rebuilt carb I smelled gas.

On the other hand, that sounds like a good deal on the Northern Lights. If I could figure out a place to put it on my boat I would be very interested. They are top of the line.
