Where's your genset?

So I have been helping someone with a upgraded power plan on an older boat. Which got me thinking about equipment location. I realized that while I have been on a ton of power boats with gensets, the vast majority of the sailboats did not have one. Which leads to the questions about where they are mounted.
Some larger boats I have been on have had them in the engine room. I have also seen a number in cockpit lockers. And as I recall Caliber had one in a cabinet. I also remember being on a cat with the Genset forward of the cabin house in a dedicated locker.
So any other thoughts on possible locations?

In a larger boat with an engine room, beside or above the main engine.

Right astern the main engine. Access is from the aft cabin

A smaller one would better be in the lazarette

On my dad's Hunter 40, it was behind a panel in the aft cabin, essential under the aftmost seat in the cockpit but with no access from above.

I don’t have one, but have installed them in cockpit lockers, converted hanging lockers, under berths in various locations, inside of cabinetry, above main engines in the engine space, even once in the swim step of a power Cat in a specially modified enclosure.

Re: Where's your genset?

On this boat the most space would be a spot under the aft berth. A cockpit locker is an option as well but may have to go with a smaller Gen. He is looking at going all electric (range etc will be electric) so he was originally looking at a 5 or 6 kw but might have to downsize to go to a cockpit locker. The boat will have boosting inverter s and a large bank so that may take up some of the need.

Wherever you put the thing, ensure that whomever can easily access all sides of the device or the maintenance will suffer. Poor access is a leading cause of performance problems due to improper or inadequate maintenance.

True dat!!

I’ve put 8 kw gensets into holes that took a contortionist to fit to check the oil. Bad idea!

Yeah I've worked on express cruisers with two main engines inches apart and a gen 2 inches in front of them. Not much fun. My personal pain point when I was a tech was gens installed in smaller sportfish under the cockpit sole. Many had poor drainage on the hatch turning the gen into a giant ball of rust in a few short years.
