Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone. Interestingly, these are the same mounts that Mr. cthoops found the other day and we've decided to go with them. When we get the bigger panels we'll likely need to source from some of the places people have mentioned, but for a 50W panel it looks like these will be fine.

I bolt aluminum flat bar across the panel (long side to long side) in 2 places and then can install the mounts anywhere along them. Have used them for panels of 100 watts or so without a problem.

If you want details of a complete mounting system for solar panels I think I came up with a very good one and would be happy to share pictures of it if you send me an e-mail. This allows the panel to be rotated to almost any angle you could think of, and stow it along the boat's life railings without disconnecting anything.
