thanks guys, all very useful info! I want to us the tinned SV wire with MC4 connectors. I spent a fortune on high grade panels (Solara 140w) for the smaller foot print per watt. therefore best to keep it to pro standards.

Major difference between boat cable and solar wire is the UV resistance - boat cable is not outdoor rated.
So you put it in a conduit like I posted above. UV resistance is not an issue if you protect the wire from sunlight.

What I did was the UV resistant PV cable and waterproof MC4 connectors are all outside of the hull and terminate in a combiner box mounted on the rail, from the box onto the inside of the boat is 2 GA, Marine cable.
I think using PV cable inside the boat hull as inapproiate
