What would you expect from a jerk with a genset?

I'm curious. How loud are the water cooled gensets as on most large Island Packets? I notice a lot of them have AC and I don't think solar will hack it. Do many people run them all night to sleep in their 68 degree cabins? I know how loud air-cooled are as I have anchored next to them and as Sean describes it's like someones mowing the anchorage. Of course it was a sweet sound when our engine wouldn't start and I dinghied a battery over for charging. I would think it would even be loud in the aft cabin I assume to be directly above it.

Ric, at 10PM you are allowed to swim over and stuff a potato in the exhaust pipe. Push it in with a stick, as they heat they expand and of course with the exhaust blocked, the engine shuts down.

After a potato has been removed and the genset used after 10PM a second time, you are allowed to use a can of insulating foam and a small hose. Foam it up good, this time the exhaust system will need to be replaced.

Mind you, that's only legal and proper after curfew hours.<VBG>

Yeah and I could just imagine, if it were me shoving a spud down the exhaust or foam or whatever, it wouldn't stop the genny, it would just build up pressure till it launched the spud out the exhaust and hit my boat and take out a side window.

Of course. If you went overboard, and swim to the offending boat. Being all wet and such. You might singe your tail after getting a couple of good jolts of electricity!!

I can't speak for Island Packets, but...

You are right about solar. You can't put enough batteries and solar panels on your boat to run the air conditioner.

The generator I had installed in my Beneteau is water cooled. It is not as noisy as the propulsion engine, but it is quite noticeable.

I do not run the generator overnight while sleeping, though I guess I could if it were hot enough. It certainly wouldn't be any worse than sleeping while the boat is motoring.

Oh and thanks for the answer Coot. I guess if I am fortunate enough to get a boat with genset and A/C and if it is REALLY hot, I could run it to cool things off and then shut it off. I was usually pretty comfortable with my windscoop but there have been some still nights in the islands where the thermometer stayed above 80 all night that I just couldn't sleep. I have vowed on my return to the sea to have AC and TV.
