What part to lead wire from outside the transom to inside

So I am going to take a perfectly good boat, and add a hole to it to lead the wires from my solar panels on my davits to inside the hull. I know you don't just make a hole and fill it with some caulk, there are special waterproof thru hullsfor this, in fact I have used M12 waterproof connectors for other jobs. However, this isn't a connector, it is a hole. For the connector, it is a nut that has a compressible rubber/plastic washer/gasket that seals around the wire.

Another member said home depot carries these items, went to 2 and couldn't find anything.

Would be happy if someone could give me a part number or link to a device to do this. Thanks.

Cable clam. That what you're looking for?

Or just google "waterproof wire pass through" and pick one.

Thanks for the quick reply. Not a cable clam, that is when there is a connector on it, just need to pass the wire through.

I think the clam is the right terminology for a pass through

Suggest you go to westmarine.com and noodle around their online store &/or catalog until you find what you want.

I would suggest an alternative. If your davits are hollow pipe, then you can have a much neater lead with the wire entering your davit near the solar panel and leading into your hull inside the base plate of your davit. I did this and it allows all the wiring clear and supported.

Try searching "cable gland" on ebay, see if you think they'll work for you. I keep a range of different sizes - they're cheap as chips but work great.

They don't fit curved surfaces so well though. I generally just use solid rubber grommets & cut a hole small enough to grip the cable tight for curved surfaces like my 4" radar mast.

Blue Sea makes one just for that purpose. Comes in 3 sizes if I remember correctly.

Re: What part to lead wire from outside the transom to inside

thanks everyone. I googled the above, and found this, ancor wire seal. i think this is what i am looking for, can cut a hole in transom bolt this in, and lead wire.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NI5EXW/...I2AUUGME2HDXAG

i will check on davit backing plate, but pretty sure it is solid, and leads into a locker that does not lead into hull where batteries are.

This is what I use to get a wire through a deck.
Cable Clam

It allows you to pass a wire with a fitting through the deck and still keep it water tight.

Re: What part to lead wire from outside the transom to inside

gotcha. so what is the diff between the cable clam and cable gland. It seems like the clam will take a much larger diameter, so you can pass through something with a connector on it. In my case, I just need to pass 10ga wire that is un terminated.

PS, thanks uncle mack, didn't know the term, which made it difficult to search for.

Re: What part to lead wire from outside the transom to inside

The gland, in the Amazon link, is usually used to bring wires into water proof electric boxes.
This is another type of gland used to bring wires through decks. I think the hole is too big to work well with a 10 ga wire.

Here are the instructions for the clam.
http://assets.bluesea.com/files/reso...structions.pdf

You can size the hole to the diameter of the wire as the hole is not pre drilled.
