Cold solar pannels make more A's Ah's and Ampules per hour. Quite a lot more. Damn ridiculous, but true. Cath 22 lives on!

Oh come on.....many of us are fully aware of what Stevens 47 meant with the postings. Stu is correct but it is hardly life threatening. Why do you have to try and tear others down with such an unwarranted critical statement - and its not the first time.

I applaud Stu's long term efforts to get this point across.

I already have a life, so will disregard your advice.

Hah, you 'corrected' just in time before the critique guru climbed in and denounced you!

Re: What is your Real Amp Hour per Day Usage

Pretty much the same; I think. With our solar panels and wind generators (at anchor only) it is much harder to be certain.
Would it be worth adding a bit more information such as solar panel capacity, battery bank size and type, boat size and main consumer loads? This is the sort of thing that Jimmy Cornell started out doing and there is now a void. Could be massively useful.

Of course it will vary depending on if you are at anchor for the Day or Underway with all the electronic nav equipment and autopilot running. Number of crew also matters. So does having a wind vane vs electric autopilot. Refrigeration or no refrigeration. So to help those in the planning stages what do those out cruising or living aboard full time find to be their average power usage for Living at Anchor and While Underway?

Our data:
Crew of 4
Refrigerator and Freezer, electric Autopilot.
Living at anchor: 200-250AH/day
While Underway 300-400AH/day

Re: What is your Real Amp Hour per Day Usage

Watched pretty carefully during two seasons on the hook in the ICW and Bahamas. Avg usage ~ 120AH/day. Includes Adler Barbour fridge, Engle freezer, LED lights, fans, laptops, VHF on 24x7, SSB daily for wx nets. More when u/w (WH autopilot, chartplotter). In the fall w/ short days, our 280W of solar almost but not quite kept up. No wind gen. We added add'l solar this summer (semi-flex on the canvas) to provide u/w power and to keep things topped off in the fall and less than ideal conditions.

Racing on a Santa Cruz 40, five crew, to Hawaii.

Adler Barbour Cold Machine
Tricolor light
Sailing instruments
Some modest computer use
SSB
VHF

120 Ah per day.

It's incredibly ambiguous and confusing when people start saying "amps" when they mean "amp hours" and vice versa.

If I tell you guys "my daily use at anchor is 20 amps" do I mean 20 amp draw, and therefore 20amps*24hours = 480 amp hours? Or do I mean 20 amp hours?

Just wait until you get to 90 deg water and 90 degree air....the fridge will run a lot!!!! More.

Your numbers closely match mine in Kemah Texas in the winter when the water is cold.

Should I use a solar powered pump to spray/mist my panels to cool them down.

I'm sorry but Jim has earned the right to be as critical as he wants. By the way he wasn't being abusive or slanderous. Just made a criticism. Big difference.

Not really. If you remove 20A from a 100A battery daily (24 hours) then 20 / 24 = 0.83A per each hours is an average it is likely that never ever you may read 0.83A on the current meter. Flexibility of mind do for better relation.

Re: What is your Real Amp Hour per Day Usage

Chris, I have already confirmed that Stu is correct. My posting was about the negativity by Jim Cate. It added zero to the discussion and simply attempted to belittle another forum member. If the other forum member had committed a henious crime then fair enough but it was simply a small error that was pretty clear to unravel. Its not the first time.
It certainly does not encourage people to contribute.

Re: What is your Real Amp Hour per Day Usage

How do you 'earn the right' ? What is it that gives someone the right to be so rude without reasonable justification? A contributor makes a small error and that justifies a personal attack?
I also did not use the words that have now introduced, I said criticism - big difference indeed.
