The walk ons are very very well built. Certainly the Ferrari of the solar panel world. They were too expensive for me but the build quality is amazing German Engineering. If you have the cash I have no idea why you would buy anything else. I spent about 2 hours at the main office evaluating the different qualities of the panels and everything from the thickness of the aluminum to the quality of the mc4 connectors cannot be beat. Please note that the walk ons do not come with diodes so you need to purchase a diode board if you intend on using them. The glass panels come with built in diodes.

My inverter has some kind of scan mode, I can set the wattage, currently if nothing draws 5 W or more it goes into idle mode and draws almost nothing power wise.
What confuses me is if your not supplying power, how do you know how many amps something draws?
Lot of this electric stuff is simply beyond me, pure magic.
The USB chargers are parasites too I believe, they consume power even when nothing is plugged in, I. Don't know how much though, I gave up worrying about the small stuff, you can drive yourself nuts trying to find all the little parasites.

For the typical wall wart its about 0.5 watts so just about 1 ah a day. I figure my inverter looses that and does not really count as it's noise in the load. I only have one that I swap between phone and hot spot device.

Sort of. That would be the peak draw calculation but may not represent the actual draw at any given time.

I assume its being used 100% over the 24 hours if there is not an obvious utilization % like masthead lights. Better to choice worst case scenario IMO.

So it must have a way of supplying a low power, at a low consumption, then if draws exceeds 5 W, it must kick in the main inverter that can supply 3 KW I think.

Inverters with a standby feature have a sense circuit to detect when there is a demand and switch on the power. It varies from manufacturer exactly how that is done. Since a ac cycle is 0.016 seconds, it only takes a few cycles to ramp up the power from idle. Basically the time it takes to saturate the transformer windings, which from a human standpoint happens almost instantaneously..

A common way of doing this is that the inverter puts out a very short pulse of power every second or so and it it senses a load greater than 10-15W, it switches itself on.

Has to still be a transformer, now the DC to I assume pulsating DC conversion can maybe be solid state, but to change voltage requires a transformer, and windings? The Iron core of the transformer is why mine weighs a ton I believe.
