That's something that new cruisers find out rather quickly.
Their spreadsheet planned on 100AH per day from Solar but they
can't figure out why they are only getting 70AH per day. Shading and high temps = engine running or a Honda 2000 generator. Reality usually tears a hole in the Spreadsheet plans.

Rich has it right, Shading of panels on a sailboat at anchor is a huge issue. blocking 1/2 of one cell is enough to reduce current flow by up to 80 percent.

I will in the fall winter will move the boom to over the water with a preventor in order to get its shadow away from the panels. Summer is less of an issue as the sun is higher in the sky and more daytime hours for the photons to knock electrons off the cells

Hah......its also an excellent marinade for fish! Guess any of the types shall be welcome. Nothing like marmite soldiers at dawn.

Gentlemen (and ladies),
I know I am guilty as many others ....but cant we bury the hatchet on this unsavoury side of the posting? I have learnt a few things - I think we all have despite some knowing more, or less, than others.
We have also effectively highjacked the whole thread from the original posting.
Have a great evening/day to all.

We just installed Solara panels last week for this reason. We see much better behavior than our old normal panels. Even with 1/2 the panel in shadow we still get 1/2 the expected output (5.5 amps down to 2.5 or so).

Re: What is your Real Amp Hour per Day Usage

Had a quick look for your panels on line. Can you post some more details, please? Thanks.

I humbly apologise for describing your mothers basement as a monkey house in the thread which you cross quoted your earlier comment to.

Please let her know.

You can buy them from coastal climate control.

Solara 140 watt. Mine are glass but they also sell flexibles by Solbian and walk ons by solara.

The walk ons are very very well built. Certainly the Ferrari of the solar panel world. They were too expensive for me but the build quality is amazing German Engineering. If you have the cash I have no idea why you would buy anything else. I spent about 2 hours at the main office evaluating the different qualities of the panels and everything from the thickness of the aluminum to the quality of the mc4 connectors cannot be beat. Please note that the walk ons do not come with diodes so you need to purchase a diode board if you intend on using them. The glass panels come with built in diodes.

Re: What is your Real Amp Hour per Day Usage

Absolutely concur that both the Solara glass (Ultra-S) and walk-on (especially the Power-M) are exemplary products.

I like to say that Solara (I had the old Solara on OceanPlanet for the 04/05 Vendee) is making up for the notorious delamination issues of the past, much like GM is making up for the death of the EV1 with the Chevy Volt...;-)

However the Solbian are best for canvas installations, and are also popular for large deck installations where the lighter weight is a key advantage.

That's why good dealers like Coastal Climate Control and ourselves sell both Solbian and Solara...
