Re: WESTERBEKE genset problem

Oh, and by the way, their are also usually a couple of relays that the circuits for the Murphy switches run though, often these are the standard 30 amp automotive four or five blade cube looking relays.
They can also cause shutdowns, and of they are the little black cube relays, are available at any car parts store for not much money

Re: WESTERBEKE genset problem

Thanks for all the input and the "official" advice from Westerbeke: "As you know, there are safety shut down switches in the engines DC electrical “run” circuitry. They will shut the unit down in the event of a lack of oil pressure, over-heat, or high exhaust temp. Obviously an open circuit in the wiring between these switches can be the cause of the issue too. The stop switches, both on the engine and at the remote start stop panel, are also in the same series circuit. All the switches are, aside from the oil pressure switch, normally closed and can be bypassed by jumping between the switches two terminals. Bypassing should be done one switch at a time to determine which one is the cause of the shutdown. The oil switch is normally open and it closes once oil pressure builds up, it has to close every time the engine starts so it is the most susceptible to failure. It is very important to keep in mind that the switches might be shutting the unit down with good reason. In other words, if there is no oil pressure and the oil switch is bypassed the engine will suffer catastrophic damage if you were to keep the switch jumped out while continuing to run the engine. Don’t forget the stop switches, they too are frequently used and are possible causes of the problem. "

Re: WESTERBEKE genset problem

I would disconnect the safety switches one at a time and run the generator. When you disconnect the culprit the generator will continue running instead of dying.
