Yes, that is true that you should not change the settings unless you know what you are doing, however the device is made to have the settings changed and so, if you have one of these on your boat then you should learn all about it and ensure that you have set the unit up correctly.
If you as the boat owner, do not understand the device then it more than likely will not be optimised for your boats requirements.
