Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

I would be very suspicious of those output figures if they are from the unit pictured. The amount of power you can extract from the wind must be related to the area from which you are extracting it and since only one side is extracting and the other producing drag there does not appear to be enough effective area to produce that much power.

Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

A disadvantage of vertical axis wind generators is they normally have to be started, not by the wind but by a separate motor.

So, it isn't surprising the slow to start problem exists. Once started however, they continue going. Experimenters may want to add a starter of some sort.

Hello,

I see the Mast-R has a new design in a YouTube video the posted. Anyone see one in action, or know anyone that has a set to tell us the real world performance of these wind turbines ?

Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Here is a new VAWT from the UK with good information on the website.

Rated output: 24W at 8m/s (17.8mph)(15.5kts) (max 200W @ 50kts!)

LE-v150 Wind Turbine - 150w Vertical Axis Silent Wind Generator

About $1200 US.

The output claims of this unit seem more believable than for the Kronous.

Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Has anyone bumped to someone that has some practical experience with the Mast-R yet?

With what happened to Bob Bitchin, he likely never got around to installing it on his vessel.

Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Hello,

I am still hopeful to get a review and performance report from someone. I am on the other side of the planet, and sure would hate to pay the high shipping cost if it does not have the output they say !

What happened to Bob ?

Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Gotcha...

Thought some additional weirdness had happened on top of the 2012 madness.

Thanks

Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

So I talked to Bob Bitchin last weekend about this. He never got to install one on his boat before all the crazyness happened. He did talk to a friend who was in a slip next to one for a week. His friend said it was LOUD! and he was very happy to leave.

I have trouble believing this style of wind gen could be noisy unless something was seriously wrong with it, like a bad bearing.

Or a poor install. Or once out in the real world for a while getting knocked about...

This is what Bob was told. So by the time I tell it hear, it is 4th-5th person. Take it all with a grain of salt.

The Le 150 seems like a good product. Anyone have one of these?

Re: Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Hello,

Since the Mast-R does not seem to have any actual working reviews. I thought I would see what I could put together here in Hong Kong. All the factories are within an hours drive !

On the foundation of the multiple blade design of a VAWT. I came up with this plan with a few factory engineers to fit on the flybridge hardtop of my boat.
