To Bond, or Not to Bond ...

My boat was built with all the bronze through hulls wired (bonded) together. We have had her for a little more than a year, and we seem to be going through zincs very quickly. She is moored in the same place as our previous boat, which didn't have anywhere near the same zinc wasteage rate.

Could the problem be the original bonding, and should I unbond the through hull;s? I've seem soem comulns from Nigel Caslder suggesting as much.

I posted a similar thread a few months ago and gave a link to a West Marine article from their site. I had a thur fitting completely corrode away last year and the only thing between the sea and the interior of the boat on a 1/1/4" hole was caulking.

So after some research I when though the boat and unbonded all the thur valves. Now the only things boanded are the fuel tank and mast/chainplates.

Seems that normally is wrong with bonding the valves, but the wires need to be well maintained.

But in the end this just my opinion.

The only bonding we have are rudder shaft, P bracket and prop shaft via the engine to a large pear anode in sight of all three. An additional shaft anode is also fitted to the prop shaft.

I would go with Nigel Calder.
